Even if they don't take the car, they do damage getting into it. The trick is to keep them out. There was an alarm installer I knew that put in a proximity alarm, one of those that triggers when you get too close to the car even if you don't touch it. It would set off a recording of some kind of psycho dog barking that made people really jump back!
Two nights ago, my wife gets a call on her cellphone at 1:30 am...a friend of hers was driving down the street and saw 2 guys breaking into my 98 Jimmy (Vette locked in the garage). Its pouring rain, I pull on my pants, grab my Taurus 945 and run out the back door. I throw down on them with the heater and they take off running down the street. I am chasing them in my socks and no shirt telling them all the way that they were going to die. Picture the first "Lethal Weapon", except I am a fat 47 Y.O. italian. I was closing the gap on them believe it or not, and I was telling them to get ready for some lead rain. About 2 blocks away, a cop car comes around the corner and I come to an abrupt halt, hands in the air. The cop takes me down, chewing me a new one, hooks the bracelets on me as these guys escape through someones yard. They wouldn't even send the dog after them, as it was "only a car prowling". After they got the story, they let me go....I would do it again as I am sick of being ripped off. It turns out that they dropped a soft air pistol in a real black nylon holster next to my rig. Lets say the were very lucky.

Try this:
HOW TO INSTALL A SECURITY SYSTEM
1. Go to a secondhand store and buy a pair of men's used size 14-16 work boots (about $5.00) .
2. Place them on your front porch, along with a copy of
Guns & Ammo Magazine (another $5) ..
3. Put a few giant dog dishes ($5 at GoodWill) next to the boots and magazines.
4 Leave a note on your door that reads:
Babe,
Big'un, Duke, Slim, & I went for more ammo and beer. Back in an hour..
Don't mess with the pit bulls - they attacked the mailman again this
morning and messed him up bad. I don't think Killer took part, but it was
hard to tell from all the blood. Anyway, I locked all four of 'em in the
garage. Better wait outside.

Beat me to the punch. People at Tire Kingdom couldnt figure out why the car didn't want to pull forward. Long time ago and I will never go there again.
I assume you wouldn't go back for some other reason.
If I had a standard that had to have work done on it that I was incapable of (tire changes for example), 1st thing I would do is to explain EXACTLY how the parking brake works.
I assume that outside of the "corvette world"......normal people would have no clue as to how to operate one of those things.
I like the idea of the silent pager alarms. Thief has no idea that I am aware that he is breaking into my car until I pull the hammer back on my Ruger .44 mag. revolver (damn I love that big thing!!!).
