I brought my 91 in today to get the heater core changed out.
The mechanic told me he had to take the seats out to do the job and that it is taking him longer than the sugested 4.5 hours of labour to do the job.
Does anyone think he is trying to pull the wool over my eyes?

Taking the seat out is a four bolt removal process.....about 5 to 10 minute job. 4.5 hours to r & r a heater core seems very resonable.
I bet you could do it your self after doing a search on "how to" and fast guy process.
I bought mine from the chevy dealer when I did it about 5 years ago. I definitely didn't want to do the job again. 4.5 hours is just about right, and pulling the seat was a necessity for me. I think I took 6 hours since I'd never done it before.
I paid about $550 and it was worth every penny. I drive my C4's year round. On those cold days of winter I wanted to drive it but would take a car that had heat instead. Having the heater core replaced gave me more choices. Unfortunately, I didn't get to earm my heater core replacement certificate.
90-93 heater cores are easy to change. keep the seat in it's a comfortable work seat while doing the job.
once you get dash pad off and hush panels and a couple other thing it will look like this.
Loosen all the 9/32 screws that attach the large inner dash vent. Then drill these rivets out and you can remove the whole right dash frame. then pull up on that center inner vent duct and you will have a lot of rome to play with.
