I dont know if it is a jealousy thing other than you pay more attention to your surrounding when in your car. I notice it more when I'm in my 79 Z28 that people get close, pull out in front of and I do notice the cops are more prone to "go your way" when I'm in that car as well. I drive a 04 silverado extended cab as a daily driver so let them pull out in front of me.

I don't think people always want to race(the people in minivans, trucks, etc) so much as just watch the Vettes take off like a bat out of hell. They know they are going to lose anyways.

One time I was driving through Waupaca at 40 miles an hour, a huge jacked up diesel truck was in the right lane, I am slightly behind him in the left lane. My front bumper was about halfway through the bed of the truck lengthwise. All of a sudden big truck man just decides to merge into my lane. There's a concrete median to my left and a huge *** truck ready to run my car over to the right....hit the brakes, barely made it out with no scratches. He didn't even see me

Drive defensively.
It doesn't matter if it's the uniformed tax collectors or idiot drivers, the best defense is alertness and anticipation.

That's one of my biggest fears in a C4. Where I live 1 out of 5 cars is a jacked up or large truck. I worried that they are going to come in my lane and literally run over me. Or worse, be rear ended by one. Some of the trucks around here I don't think would have any trouble climbing over a C4. Specially at 60+ mph.

You know....it just came to mind, I am a vette owner but when I'm driving my uh...non vette jalopy I tend to tailgate other corvettes, specially C4's not purposedly but in an effort to admire it's beauty best I might be subconsciously getting a bit too close for comfort.
So not always may be jealousy.

Sorry guys no pictures. I only have a picture of the minivans tag.

Lushdrunk's method to stop a tailgater.

#1: Ride beside a slow moving car or semi truck. After 10 miles of 45 mph they tend to back off when you go back to 70mph.

#2: I carry a 100pc pack of "copper-head" BB's in my center console. For when I have the top off. If anyone is riding you *** just flick a couple of BB's out the roof and they will back off real quick. If you flick them out at any speed over 50mph they will fly right over your car and land on the tailgater's windshield.

#3: This is very dangerous and can only be done with a fast car. I only do this if the other two options fail and their is NO ONE else around. If someone pisses me off enough and will not get off my a$$ I will put the car in a lower gear, hit my brakes for a split second. Just hard enough to bow in front of them, but not hard enough to loose alot of speed or lock tires. Then real quickly get on the throttle and pull away from them. It will cause them to hit their brakes very hard and scare them into leaving you alone. Ive only done this twice but both times the car was so scared they pull off and park.
Why not move over to the right where slower traffic belongs????

I'm hoping this is internet bravado since behavior like that is likely to **** PEOPLE OFF and lots of folks I know in NC are big, bad, and PACKING>>>>>>

I used to practice number 3 all the time in My 2001 honda when someone was too close for my comfort, and I've done it numerous times in my 98 Golf.... (its a flippin Golf, not a GTI, its slow!) I really didn't like paying for those cars so if they wrecked me, so be it. I've done this from Santa Barbara through San Diego. I'll admit I used to be the guy riding too close, but after nearly being rear ended numerous times by other drivers I decided it wasn't worth it to be guilty of tailgating, especially in my Vette/Titan

I drive very defensively b/c of lack of visibility as well as lack of attention by many drivers. For example, whenever I see a car on the right at an intersection, and I'm able, I more slightly to my left in my lane in an attempt to draw their attention. Also I added DRL to my '91 several years ago and I think they too assist to increase visibility!

I've read thru all the replies thus far and although this was mentioned in bits and parts.....we have a lot of drivers out there that have no clue about what defensive or safe driving really is all about. I see many drivers and I will not go into defining the classes that are on your "bumper" and could NEVER EVER stop if the car in front made an emergency stop. What ever happen to the car length rule????.. What happened to "driver's ed" that was in all the High Schools?

And the real scary thing is today's drivers will be "teaching" theirs son's and daughter's!

And I thought it was me also! I have found that in most cases it's the
guy, yes a male person, that's driving a 2 liter piece of crap, with the
after-market loud exhaust add-ons, that are the ones riding your bumper only to jump in the other lane trying to prove his ride is as bad or better than yours. I usually see them at the next light, give'em
a smile and shake my head. What a world, huh?

I believe it should be a federal rule that says you must attend a general mechanics class to get your drivers licenses.
They should teach you what to do if and when something bad happens.

How to change a tire.
How to Check fluid levels and tire pressures.
What to do if your car dies in traffic or on a highway.
What to do if your throttle get stuck**
etc

Just a general mechanics class. You could teach it in 2 hours.

Just like all the "stuck throttles" on the Toyota's this year. People where crashing into everything because their throttle was stuck. Did no one know that if you take the car out of gear it will quit moving!!?? Or hell cut the car off. You may loose power brakes, but it sure beats running into the back of another car at 90mph.

If people understood how a car works, I don't believe they would trust it as much and be so careless.

aboatguy: I'm talking about on a two lane road. (one lane each) or when #1 and #2 don't/wont work.
And here we don't recognize the slow lane (right lane) as a law. Its BS. We have none of the signs that say "slower traffic keep right" And we have no minimum highway speed limit.

Q: What have we learned here?

A: There are a lot of idiot drivers are on the roads in C4s.

I'm guessing that most of you on here talking about driving like morons, slamming on the brakes, etc constantly have the nose of your C4 stuck up somebody's exhaust.

cars are somewhat like the Internet and give people a sense of anonymity thus empowering them to do dangerous behaviors it stands to reason that they will feel aggressive that is until you play the game with them.
if tailgated i simply move into the other lane if available and slow down drastically and as they pass i get behind them for a while. they normally get freaked and get the message .. though not in all cases. sometimes they will try the same maneuver at which time you simply blow past them and slow down after a quarter of mile and wait for them. normally works to let them know you are not intimidated.
now for the left lane drivers if you get beside them in the right they will speed up trying to keep you from passing them. if you get trapped behind a pick car ahead at least the turtle in the left lane is going fast enough to pass the slower traffic. it is always 100% effective. they think they are over powering you in a sense but in fact you are in control by making them drive faster which is what you really want just be mindful of your closing rate on the slower traffic you are approaching

Mike (went to drivers ed and earned my drivers license in NC)
The quote you highlighted don't have anything to do with the original quote. That is why I said if #1 or #2 don't work. Meaning, you can't do #1 or #2 .. Sometimes people ride your *** for unknown reasons. be it on a highway or on a Internet forum. Some dick hole will always be their to ride your *** for no reason. But whatever.

So your saying that NC enforces a traffic law, But don't post any signs, OR tell anyone about it? My brother-in-law is an ex NC trooper. I asked him about this not even two weeks ago wile we where driving to Asheville and he said he was not aware of any law for fast/slow lanes. Here in NC it is just considerate for slower traffic to keep right. Its NOT a law.

I just looked over ALL of chapter 20 General statutes and seen nothing that you are claiming. Chapter 20 is over 100 pages long. What part of chapter 20 are you referring to?
Because this is the ONLY thing I can find in regard to highway speeds.

"(h) No person shall operate a motor vehicle on the highway at such a slow speed as to impede the normal and reasonable movement of traffic except when reduced speed is necessary for safe operation or in compliance with law; provided, this provision shall not apply to farm tractors and other motor vehicles operating at reasonable speeds for the type and nature of such vehicles."

That sure don't sound like they enforce a "set" slow speed limit to me, Nor does it mention ANYTHING about the right and left lanes being designated a slow or fast lane.

And just so you know, Ive never had anyone "Hunt me down", nor has anyone vandalized me in a parking lot.

Get you facts together before you play round 2 of keyboard tough guy. Oh and this time get some real facts.

EDIT: I did find this that talks about slower traffic keeping right.
Notwithstanding any other provisions of this section, when appropriate signs have been posted, it shall be unlawful for any person to operate a motor vehicle over and upon the inside lane, next to the median of any dual‑lane highway at a speed less than the posted speed limit when the operation of said motor vehicle over and upon said inside lane shall impede the steady flow of traffic except when preparing for a left turn. "Appropriate signs" as used herein shall be construed as including "Slower Traffic Keep Right" or designations of similar import.

And I found out it is the law to keep right if you are towing another vehicle.

The only place in NC that i know of that has lane laws, is the mountains. All simi trucks have to stay to the right going up, and down the mountains. other then that, Ive never see a sign on our highways that reads "slower traffic keep right" And I look. I'm a big supporter of the fast lane.
