Funny, I just saw one today in San Jose. It looked OK, but that's about it. Sorry, but flat black cars look too much like they're primered and waiting for a real paint job.
Truer words were never spoken. I wouldn't even paint a CHEvette flat black
As a fellow C4 owner, I think this body style lends itself more to one of the many wonderful colors available during these years.
I was at Bloomington Gold this past summer and saw an awesome C3
that was painted gloss and flat black. It looked very as a "muscle car look" and I think it would look great on a C5 too but for some reason the C4 is such a sleek look that it requires a shiny finish no matter what color it is. I have attached a photo of the C3 from Bloomington Gold for your viewing pleasure.
One suggestion, after 36 years of marriage, I'd go with your wife's color choice.
I typically hate flat black cars because they look unfinished to me however this car looks so sinister and badd I can not help but love it. The no frills no chrome monochromatic flat black paintscheme is executed perfectly from the wheels to the body.... the only thing I would do is tint the tail, marker, and running lights. I would also fix the exhaust it appears to be hanging way too low and possibly hit that with some flat black
I think it highlights every flaw in it too. First thing i notice in the above pic is that gap looks large betwee the clamshell and door (may be an optical illusion tho), and that his exhaust is really hanging too low in the back... (and crooked too) I LOVE blacked out vettes, they look pure sinister to me, doesn't need to be a flat finish to accomplish that though.
I'm doing a satin black below the molding and a color above, similar to some of the C3 twotones. I have the black on and will post a few pic's when done. Right now , I'm liking it , makes the car 'look' wider. Theres a pick in my profile of the 'before', with the upgraded body panels,'unpainted'. I may add a pin stripe contrast , but not sure yet.

The gap is there lots of C4s have that.
Toss some paint on it, so many nice curves to show, the paint will accentuate that. 88/89 Dark metallic blue was an awesome color and looks super sharp on those cars.
I saw a flat black Lexus as well as a flat black S-10 truck today...
I am all for the theory of to each his own and do what you want with your own car (there are plenty of people who don't like what I do to my cars) but in my opinion, it is hideous on anything other than an old hotrod with very very few exceptions.
