Seems like I have been a slave to my vette the last 3 months. I am so burned out right now working on my vette. End of last September, my vette was running perfect. I cant help my self sometimes. My wife says I wont stop workin' on cars until I die.
So I decide I want to polish my TPI. Murphy came with the troops and this took way longer than I wanted it too.
OK im driving again, enjoying my vette and then I get greetings from California for smog testing. Murphy was back on this one. Take the plenum off again. And 3 new cats later.
I know what you mean! Recently, we decided to sell my wife's DD (08 Pontiac) in order to get rid of a car payment. Now I drive the Vette and she drives the Honda. It's been a couple months and in that time I've had to replace the Rear u-joints and driver side regulator. I had to have the U-joints done that day and it cost me about $400! I guess you can have a payment and few problems or no payment and more problems
It does seem like these things go in cycles though so hopefully you can have a few thousand trouble free miles ahead
I have well over 250K on my vette. My tranny is untouched as well as my u joints and rear end, and suspension. All I want is a little break where I can drive it for awhile without workin' on it.
Just remember new ones are about $50k. I recall some comment you made about when you bought your vette new and all kind of reminds me of my '08. Cost a lot once and I think it will have to last me 15 or 20 years.
I'm not sure I have it in me to drive a car to the grave...I'm never the last owner of any car I've ever had.
Old cars are like old people. It never ends until it ends
Well im old. Im a year model 1957. Im still running all original parts. I have never been opened up. My radio has been tuned to rock and roll and my ash tray is unused. Hopefully I can get a few more years out of this body. My warenttee ran out years ago. The body has gained weight thru many years of service. Gas and oil run thru my veins.

Ya, but when you get our age, the doctors want to check our oil and we don't come with a dip stick
It never ends even if it isn't stuff breaking it's upgrades. I spent the better part of two years with mine apart or in different states of non running. Now it's a driver again and I'm hesitant to do anything least it snowball into another huge project.
Hey Mike,
Seeing that pix of your Black Beauty on a stand was gut wrenching for me. I have an 87 black vert. She's been having some work done seems like on and off all the time since I got her in Aug. But with 120K+ I figure it's what she deserves. She hasn't left me stranded which is always my gauge of loyalty.
Fortunately for me I've got an awesome shop I can take her to. Would love to do the work myself but simply don't the time or resources to do that. Most recent was a heater core replacement which, go figure, found a big mouse nest in the dash. Gah, what is it with vettes and mice.
Anyways, wish you a long peroid of just driving your beauty! Happy holidays!
Looks to me like your investing in the right areas to catch a break. I am doing long overdue PM on mine in the hopes of staving off some of the more serious stuff. Just replaced all the clutch hydraulics so I am hoping changing fluids out of the brakes, engine, rad, etc will help out. I dont have the budget to fix anything major right now so I am crossing my fingers,
You will catch your break. You may not be done for the moment but dont give up on that member of the family!
The solution is simple. Buy a C6. Everything is new and under warranty. However I thoght doing all these repairs was part of the fun of the hobby????? Just remember these cars are not throw away cars like all the rest of the stuff out there. When big stuff goes on them they go to the scrap yard .Thats where all those Nissan 300Zs, Mitsubshi 3000GTs, Supra turbos and all the rest are. These cars have value and will be around for decades. There Corvettes and something is really special about them. Just keep that in mind when you get discouraged.
It wasn't so bad. When my doc did mine, I assumed the position and the doc put his left hand on my shoulder and with his right hand...No, wait...He put is right hand on my shoulder and with his left hand....No....Dayam! That SOB had BOTH hands on my shoulders!
To Mike: Thought you could use a smile. But, this (restoration bit) too will come to an end. BTDT (on other cars), and I think it is better to "just doit" - the proactive approach - and not constantly be reacting as stuff finally dies.
Will this ever end, and I can just relax and enjoy the money pit?
Mike
Since I am pretty sure this is something of a rhetorical question, I am likely saying what you already know and others have stated.
It ends if/when you surrender and stop playing the game. Hats off to you for keeping and, more importantly, driving a C4 Vette. If your idea of enjoyment was parking it and never driving it, then these "fun" interludes would end. However, that isn't your idea of fun, so this "fun" will never end.
For my part, I gain inspiration from guys like you, so keeping driving and please keep "talking".
