I think If you used shorty headers designed for the 98-00 C5 it would line up well that is what I plan on doing in the future to replace my stock 98 c5 exhaust manifolds. It lined up to stock 93 LT1 exhaust on my car. All I had to do was cut the drivers side and flare it.

If you do that, ensure they are CARB approved shorty headers. There was a C5 member who had an issue at a SMOG shop because his headers were shorty and NOT listed in the CARB.

The way the C5/C6 cats fit is not the ay it would fit on any other Corvette. A professional job will not draw any attention against it.

There are millions of HOT RODS in California, SMOG shops are no strangers to the types of changes. Find a SMOG shop own by a gear head and he will fully understand

Actually, the EROD installation instructions are very specific about where the CATS may be located. If it was just a matter of taking it to a normal smog inspection and passing a sniffer I think it would be fine, but this will have to be inspected by a BAR referee first & I've been told not to expect any slack.

I'm hoping the GM tech will clarify the CAT location issue and help with the BAR inspection. A guy over on the Third Gen forum had trouble getting his EROD passed, but had no problem after a GM tech intervened.

How about you contact BAR and let them tell you how to "modify" this fitting issue. This is not a emissions issue, this engine is supposed to be 100% emission compliant in CA.

Have you look into Hot Rods forums? They use the LS engines for many applications.

Honestly I've been a bit leery of contacting the BAR---kinda like stepping up to a cop and asking "is this legal?" I traded emails with them a few months ago but didn't get much help. Working directly with a local referee would probably be more productive.

Let's see what the GM tech has to say. (I called yesterday but the recording said call back 8am-8pm M-F eastern time.)

I appreciate your comments, and sincerely hope you are right.

These screen captures from the video show the CATs installed in their original configuration:

Here is all the installation instructions say about the CATS (there is another section about the orientation and location of the O2 sensors):

And here is what the CA EO says:

Those are the only facts I have. If we could simply separate the two CATS a foot or two everything would fit fine---but that configuration isn't addressed. Would separating the CATS degrade the emissions---probably not, but it would likely catch the attention of the referee with an unpredictable outcome. This is what I'm going to discuss with the GM tech.

continuing...

Here's what a local GM dealer, with a high reputation on the forum, said when I pm'ed him about the separating the cats:

In all of my dealings with EPA and CARB, what they say must be followed perfectly. More than likely, they will be taking measurements and making sure the directions were followed closely. I doubt they will allow any discretion
and here's a reply I got from someone who actually got his EROD install approved:

it really sucks they did not want to pass my car so I call gm performance to help me I was actually there first case having trouble getting this to pass everyone before me seems to be going to this pretty easily... but after about 4 months gm sent the referee station that I was going to and including all of the referee stations a type of power point presentation for these packages and now after they have they have sent these presentations to the referee stations you should have no problem once the presentation was sent to my referee I was in n out no problems so to sum up your question you will have no problems with the referee or bar and if for some reason you do call gm performance and ask for a gentleman named j**** b****... he will send the presentation out to your referee station no problems at all so don't even worry about the bar or the referee. You're golden!!!

Not a bad idea but...

I have to work for another 4-6 years to afford getting my youngest through college (first day tomorrow).

Where to go?
  • Spent all but two years of my life in CA
  • Want to be close to the ocean for SCUBA diving
  • Want to be near other Bluegrass/oldtime musicians for jamming
  • Want to cash out the equity in my house to retire on
  • Don't want to deal with any big cultural differences (religeous, political, etc.)
  • Don't want to deal with extreme weather

It's maybe the most liberal state, but I like it here and I hate only the month of August.

I'm sure the OEM cats locations are within those specs. I thought CARB wanted the C5/C6 angle which it is installed and that's not the case.

Honestly, the second cat will never fit right after the first cat in a C4. It's location got to be modified.

Here is another stupid case of how the CA CARB works. Let's say you eliminate those four cats and install two California catalyst converts and two bullet style parallel to the transmission. It will pass smog with flying colors, but these office POGS only see what's on the book. If the fumes are "clean" who cares where the cats are located.

I hope you make this works because it looks like that modification would not work in CA.

Spoke with the GM Powertrain Contact Center this morning, got a case number, and asked about separating the CATs and getting a copy of the EROD presentation they are supposedly sending to the CA BAR referees that expedites the inspection.

The EROD presentation was for earlier versions and isn't relevant (or available) for mine. CAT fitment discussion ongoing...
