Kicking and bucking like that after normal operation temp could be the ignition module in the distributor cap. I had a 85 once that did the same thing. And it was the module. And it didn't set any codes either. When they start to go bad they mess up when they get hot.

Also when you turn the key to the run position but don't start it the cel should come on til you start it. If not the bulb is probably out.

Thanks for taking the time to reply, it's definitely not the cat as that only exists in the form of its shell (for off road use only of course). I'll be taking a look at the ignition then

google figuring out which cylinder is which, label the spark plug wires and label the distributor cap. then pull off the wires from the cap and unscrew the cap bolts (7mm i think) and check if your cap and rotor are fubar.

also u can grab a timing light, they are really cheap, a super basic one will be fine, borrow if u have to, google how to chexk timing, unplug the esc plug, single wire by the windshield wiper motor housing, and chexk your timing. should be 6 d btdc.

backfiring out intake comes from the intake valve being open when there is ignition in a cylinder. aka, timing. OR your intake valves have a hole in them (rare) or they are otherwise not seating correctly allowing for the noise to kickout theough the intake.

my guess is that the ignition control module (icm) is fubar. tough to test. so test everything else and if u dont find culprits, spring for the icm.

And it needs an engine, loss of compression in cylinder 5. It's down to 75 pounds

I have an 87 and I am in Cincinnati too. I read your whole thread and I feel bad for you. The L98 is fixable at a reasonable cost. Don't give up now after all the good work you've done.

why on earth would one even attempt that? Not that much trouble to pull the engine.

Pulled it off to do a head gasket, originally. Found stuck rings and it wasn't that much more to pull the oil pan and replace them.

Bearings too while I was there.

Thanks! I should be getting it back from Brogan&Folz tomorrow. They did the Jasper L98 rebuild that includes a 100k warranty which allows the car to be ready for my Wedding next month. As of this afternoon they were about 98% done and barring any hiccups it was going to be started this evening or first thing in the morning tomorrow. Either way I can't wait to have the car back.

I hope to see you at Cars and Coffee sometime! Its down at Fuel Coffee on Riverside Drive, theres a few C4s that come including a GS and ZR-1 on occasion.

So I have had the car back with the new engine now for 10 days. I've put 350 miles on it so I have not finished the break in period but it certainly feels like it has more power than the old one. It also runs more smooth than the original when it was running right. I'm just glad to be back out cruising in it once again.

stop working on and improving the car. man, you have me kicking my own butt for not getting out in the driveway to work on mine, Congrats ob a great rebuild and how the car turned out.I bought my 86 as a driving project. Just getting it out of the paint shop . Seems a never ending job to get everything right. After I do the inside, it should be a good looking vette. I spmetimes race it at the drags here in Indy, so gotta, just gotta have it looking decent.

Thanks for the comments! It is certainly a never ending project, it needs the heater core replaced and a new dash pad. But its all a good time and I've loved working on it with my dad

So luckily the car was finished in time to use in my wedding as the getaway car. It was a little chilly with the heater core bypassed and rainy out, but it ran perfectly.
