Took the car to Gateway Raceway last night, and it shut down on the MLK Bridge on the way over. I coasted down the bridge to the side of the road, and messed with it for about 15 min, thought the opti harness wasn't making good contact. Got it started, went to the track, and on the second run it shut down again at the end of a run. About a half hour later I limped it back to the pits. Let it sit for about an hour, and limped it home.
I'm pretty sure the opti is dying. Ocassional, the car has been backfiring upon start, and the symptoms last night were exactly like when it died before. Would act up when hot, but would run when it cooled down.
It looks like I bought all the parts for the opti upgrade, just in time.

No, I meant to say opti upgrade. I'm upgrading to the 95/96 opti.
I'm still not sold on the Delteg system, guess time will tell.
Mike even if you use the Delteq system it still relies on the low resolution sensor for its trigger. No matter what you are still stuck with a damn optical sensor one way or another. I seen one ingenious guy that took the optical sensors from an opti and installed them in a HEI distributor body. Using that and a converted LTx intake he was able to make it run so that he had the external HEI type distributor with the optical sensors from the opti to satisfy the PCM. But that takes a lot of work to convert and properly mount and sync the sensors into a HEI distributor housing.
Is it possibly the coil or ignition module? I've heard a lot of people have replaced the opti without really needing it.
I'm not 100% sure that the opti is my problem. But, I already have the parts bought to upgrade the opti to the 95/96 unit. So, I can run the Cloyes DR timing set with my engine. I am preparing to do another camshaft change, and fiqured I might as well do it right.
