Default Dash Cluster/ Engine Dieing Out

I have a 1989 coupe with around 100k. When I'm driving all of a sudden the dash cluster goes black and the engine wants to die out. I pull over and shut down, start back and everything is fine. Any ideas???

I have the same issue on my '91....I've tried to diagnose it but it has eluded me.

I'm going to strap it on a dyno and see if we can't replicate it under more controlled conditions...

I can't seem to find a mechanic that wants to sit on the engine while I do a full-throttle blast down the road...go figure

Have you looked at the battery terminals. Low current can cause havoc

It definately sounds like a ground/shorting problem. I agree with Agent 86, check the battery posts first. Mahe sure you have a good connection. A similar problem occurred on my brother's 89. By pulling on the battery cables I found that the previous shop that had worked on his car had broken the bolt out of the negative cable. They used a replacement bolt that didn't fit correctly which allowed it to make intermittant contact even though it seemed tight. PULL on the cables, don't just look. Be gentle, but firm.

Next look under the battery and check the grounds and fusable links. If your battery previously spilled acid down there it will cause corrosion that causes shorts. Again pull on the cables.

Lastly, check out Bryan A. Thompson's excellent Digi-dash repair article at: http://batee.com/corvette/dcrg/index.shtml

Been there...checked all the electrical connections under the battery (actually took them apart & cleaned them).

Mine manifests itself when the car is under load...I think it's a broken wire somewhere in the harness but I can't get it to fail when it's sitting still revving the motor. Mine cuts out and then comes back.

I've changed the coil, the spark module, plugs, wires & rotor...it's a real PITA...I HATE intermittent fails. I wish it would just break, at least it would be easy to find.
