Default Antenna Issue

Before I start making good money bad I would like to repair/replace my antenna. My 84 had no radio and the antenna was stuck in the up position when I got my car two years ago. I installed a radio and when power is applied I can here the motor, but the antenna will stay in the up position. I disconnected power to the antenna and have lived with the antenna stuck in the up position. What do I need? A ribbon and or mast?

A small note, my antenna has a slight bend from a violent tempest a couple months ago. Will this hinder the operation of the antenna?

My antenna broke off, but the motor would run when ever I turned the radio on or off, indicating that the motor was probable still working. To fix the problem I bought a replacement mast kit that came with the mast, ribbon, and a socket to remove the nut at the base of the antenna. You turn the radio on, unscrew the nut and pull the mast out and replace the it with the new mast and ribbon.

I fought this problem with my 86 for 2 years. I gave up on GM's earlier attempt to make a decent stock antenna. I bought the 88 year model (upgrade for 84 to 87). It is actually made by harada for GM. Much quieter, dependable, looks like original and mast can easily be replaced.

Check the C4 Tech Tips section on this Forum for the antenna motor and mast replacement article I wrote.

You will more than likely have to remove your motor, open it up, remove the broken bits of old mast that are jammed in it, re-install the motor, then insert the new mast from the Chevy dealer or Corvette speciality catalogs.

It's not too hard, a good afternoon project.

I fixed mine by just buying the plastic ribbon from ecklers- $20 and a few hours (cause I'm slow) - a trick is to remove the tailight to get easy access to the nut.

As mentioned the repair kir will do the job depending on how bad that bend is. The repair kit only comes with the finial end of the mast so if it is really bent it may be a waste of money.
