I believe the TC is locking and unlocking quite frequently while I am driving on the freeway at about 70mph in 4th gear on my 4L60E. The rpms will change by about 300+ on their own without my changing the throttle position. When this happens you can feel the change in the car and it gets quite annoying. It's like the car is confused about what to do and can't quite decide. Anyone have ideas on what might cause this and what I can do to fix it?
Where's pete.K at?. u might need to make sure lockup solenoid is good or install or upgrade to 4th gear only lockup, can be buy from ebay for about 15 bucks or on transmissionhead.com and install is easy dont have to remove tranny just remove pan,
As i said let pete. k chime in and clarify on this subject.
About 70k on the transmission serviced about 2 months ago. The 4th gear only lockup thing sounds interesting but I'm not sure it would fix my problem. The car is already in 4th gear when the problem occurs so would this keep it locked all the time in 4th or still allow it to choose based on speed or rpms?

I missed this post somehow. A scanner will show any slippage (internally) of the lock up plates. More than 100 rpm difference(engine vs torque converter output)is a problem. The problem you describe is refered to as "torque converter chuggle". It has many causes in an electronic trans vs non electronic 700r4(4l60). A properly trained tech with a snap on scanner is needed here.
It is the throttle position sensor. Do not be offended by me saying:
Without even a basic understanding of a computer controlled drivetrain, you cannot solve your problem. Avoid swapping parts. It is more costly in the end. For what it is worth, the common, easily swapped, inexpensive part that it could be is the lock up solenoid. Good luck and let us know how it works out.
I still have not got to a transmission shop yet but I noticed another problem that may be related. If I am cruising down the street and just barely pressing on the throttle pedal the car also seems confused about what to do and will give me a very slight hesitation then back to normal type feeling. I did pull codes from the computer and found no problems listed except for a few in the last section pertaining to airbags I believe. So with no codes listed does anyone think replacing the TPS unit might fix the problem? It's only around $50 or so so I really don't mind doing it if there is a chance it will fix the issue.
I would adjust the trans cable first.
It is located near yoiur ASR unit under the hood.
It is a flip from side to side lever.
JUst flip it twards you and the cable should snap, then you need to slide the cable back to make sure it is tight with no slack at the throttle cable. After adjust ment push the gas pedle down all the way to see if you have full throttle.

Rather than change it, check it. If no codes, it is probably good. You can check the reference"sweep" with a digital voltmeter. If it checks good, you just saved $50.

Being that I have a 4L60E wouldn't that mean there is no cable connecting the throttle to the transmission?
