i have a friend running 9.7's in 1/4 on a scat 9000. its a small block. races it all the time..
Cool... They seem decently priced but I wanted to make sure the cornerstones of the motor can hold the HP I want to build. Your buddy who runs 9.7's what is his setup?
I'm running SCAT stuff and am very happy with it. I especially liked the profile of their "stoker" rods.........very minimal clearancing on my 3.875 stroke Part numbers are on my photos if it works today

Nice, how much am I looking at buying Scat pistons rods and crank? Should I be weary of Ebay stuff?
Their billet cranks are as good as you can buy. They also make 4340 forged cranks of different grades (read weight not quality), as well as cast steel cranks that are suitable for just about anyone with a limited budget. The rods they manafacture vary from stock replacement to ultra light h-beam capable of supporting 650hp to standard weight h-beam/i-beams capable of supporting over 1000hp. I use a lot of their parts both ultra high dollar and low budget. I would like to add they are first class people to deal with also, I just had a conversation with my rep about a crank for my personal engine and he jumped through some pretty flaming hoops to make exactlly what I wanted. You can build a first class engine with their parts (and I have) if you have the $$. If you don't have big $$ to spend you can still build a good peice with their stuff (and I've done this more often than not).
E-Bay stuff is usually 2nds. Just be sure and very wary of what you are buying.

That's a question that can't be answered............it's like asking how much a car costs. I paid 2500 bux, but did some fairly nice stuff (superlite crank, forged components, ross pistons). You could probably get by on a thousand or so I would guess.........others can chime in w/ much more knowledge than I.
Lately, Scat has been having serious quality control issues. Especially with the finish machining on the crankshafts. Be sure to carefully inspect all machined area well. Mike everything. Also inspect (with a magnifying glass) the thrust surface on the crank. They have been leaving a slightly course finish and over hardening the crank. This effectively makes a file out of it. Knocked out the thrust on my latest 383. Total disassembly, refinishing the crank and rebuild(bearings, gaskets etc) needed to fix it. I know of 5 ford motors and 3 chevy's that died because of this during 05.
Yeah, I agree with reckless...........there are places to save money and places not to. I wouldn't mess with the heart and soul of a new motor to save 2 or 3 hundred "questionable" dollars. JMHO..........
I did not mean for my post to sound like a Scat bash. I would buy their stuff again, possibly. I would be better prepared for the possible problems. One other thing to mike immediately is the diameter of the front snout that holds the damper on. I have seen 2 that were too small and the balancer slipped right on by hand. Eagle made 1 and Scat made the other. All manufacturers will do nothing for you after the fact. Even if the problem is clearly their negligence. When it come to speed parts, buyer beware.

I totally agree, the first thing you should do is mic everything and make sure of what you have. No one is perfect and mistakes can be made. I will say it helps to know who you are buying from. I got a kit from Eagle 2yrs ago that was mis-machined and with one phone call to my rep I had new parts on the way and a call tag for the messed up stuff. Of course we go to PRI every year and meet these people personally so that helps us. Your engine builder or parts supplier should do the same IMO so they can get the same results if needed.

I run a scat 9000 crank, scat i-beams,srp forged pistons in my 383lt-1,9months and almost 3000 miles no problems,it does take a few slugs a mollory to balance it.
Check out this guy motor, he is using Scat cast crank http://www.tappauto.com/page.cfm?id=7
click on Jeff's mustang making 1000 WHP and watch the dyno readout.

i have used scat parts in the past and will continue to do so. i like scat over eagle just for the simple fact their i-beam rods can be had in 4340 as compared to the eagles wich are 5140 if i remember correctly. for my current engine i thought h-beams would be overkill and just adding weight- but i also thought the 5140 i-beams would be borderline.
i have ordered several parts from midwest motorsports inc. in iowa. they had about the best overall prices i found for a kit suiting my needs including shipping and balancing. the kit arrived well packaged with the full float pistons mounted on the rods (which i guess they should have been mounted since they balanced everything).
i agree, always pay attention to pete k's posts. the man knows what he's talking about
Even though the problems I have seen should have been caught by Scat, my machinest and the assembler(in my case, me) I take responsibility. Assembler always has the responsibility of making sure all is well. The other 4 engines I saw this happened to got past the watchful eye's of 2 reputable engine builders. This made me feel a bit better (that they missed it too). Still sux to tear down a new motor and go through it again.
