Default Rear End Oil?

Its about time for me to change the diff oil in my 91 auto. What do you guys recommend? I heard Red Line had a good syn. Also do you have to put posi trak additive with the syn?

I used Mobil 1 and was told by the clown in the blue shirt at the parts store as well as his close cousin at the GM dealer that the synthetic had the slip additive already and additional additive was not necessary. :bs

I use my Vette for long trips and at the end of the first 700+ day the differential made a squeaking rubbing sound every time I took a low speed turn. This then went to a clunking sound in a sharp parking lot turn.

After sucking out the old fluid and adding synthetic plus the additive the sound is gone and I am happy to say that after the next 5000+ trip the differential is fine!

I changed mine a month ago and used Mobil 1 with the GM additive. IMHO I think M1 is the best.

Thank Mike!

I just put in 4.10 gears about 350 miles ago and mine is now making a low rubbing noise on tight turns (no clunking yet).
I was worried that there was some damage done in the break-in period, but it looks like the gear oil (supposedly good for limited slip) went sour.

I'll try to get the synthetic gear oil and additive.

I was worried about the noise after all of this differential work and I'm glad to hear that it's not irrepairable damage.

-Dean.
