Looks like compressor oil all over the side of the core (which is how they look when they leak only there's usually little bits of the OEM foam filter mixed in or left on it). Now that it's apart, it looks like it went in front of the weld, which in my experience is because the line got bent - often from inadvertently leaning on it once, or one too many times). Could just be a defect too - it happens. I don't see any evidence of a fire in any of the photos.

As a side note, you might want to check your engine mounts, compressor and accumulator/drier mount. This did happen with some regularity on a Fiero I use to own - something like 3 times all under warranty, so I never bothered to look into it (though I believe GM fixed it on some later Years by adding a flexible section to the main hose).

The engine mounts were new when we installed the 396, so I'm pretty sure they are fine. Don't see a problem at the compressor, but the accumulator/drier mount is something I will take a look at. Anyone suggest weither or not to replace the drier or any other parts before I take it in to have the system charged. Still not sure which freon to go with since I have 3 cans of 12 still on the shelve.

Definitely replace the drier. If it fell apart or falls apart it (and it very well could now that it's been exposed to air) it creates one hell of a blockage.

Stick with your R12. If you need more, get your license at www.epatest.com and try Autozone (where I've never spent more than $14 for a 12oz can).
