I have seen the tiny bubbles once or twice that I remember, but rarely take the surge tank cap off. I am very, very sure that I do not have any engine problems and do not worry about the occassional tiny bubbles. I just attribute it to cavitation or for some other reason a minut amount of air is in the coolant, either trapped or from agitation.
Whatever, I don't let it agitate me.

Check for the equivalent of the 'Lisle 75500 Combustion Leak Detector'.

Like the link says, you measure some of the magic fluid into the
wand, attach it to a vacuum source and then hold the inlet end
over the radiator cap opening or other suitable access point to the
coolant. If the colour changes, then you have cause for concern.

Check with your neighbor, Stingraynut. He has been through this
and can hook you up. Might have signs of blown head gasket now

You might also want to search out oil analysis labs. It isn't costly
to have samples tested and this will show whether coolant is getting
into the bottom end.

**** out of luck here, head gasket is blown somewhere.... Had the test done today by a local mechanic shop that does free inspections and the liquid changed colour within 10 seconds....

Thanks again to all those who replied and offered advice

Au contraire, mes ami.

You diagnosed the problem before it took out your bottom end. Very
lucky and a great benefit to your budget. Many, many others here
have not been so fortunate.

Some labour, some gaskets and you could be back in business.
Alternatively, you could throw the money you just saved at the
car in the form of maintenance and performance parts.

Nice work.

Odd to see head gasket issues occur on a '94, though. The L98's
with alloy heads have been chronic offenders.

Do you use glycol and distilled water?

I do yes, i dont know what the previous owner used though, looked alot like straight water full of rust when i bought the car. I have changed it a fair few times since ive had it and the last 2 lots of coolant have stayed looking perfectly clean with nothing visible floating in the system, and perfectly clean coolant in the overflow tank.
