Does removing the EGR tubes and putting block off plates in their place increase hp any? Or is it purely an aesthetic thing, or that it just makes working on the engine easier. I want to lose mine, only because I'm bored and need something to do to my car. Seems like it would keep the engine bay a little cooler to. Anyway, what all can be removed? Does removal affect the computer any? Can block off plates be made instead of bought? Thanks.
I removed mine to clean up engine bay and to aid in the removal of valve covers. Doing it may cause excessive pinging at high coolant temps. I have a 170 stat and never see temps over 200, even in go nowhere traffic. 3 years and going strong
No it doesnt increase HP at all. It does remove a way of carbon deposits getting into the head and intake though, which themselves would hurt performance if left unchecked eventually.
Its purpose is to lower the combustion chamber temps, and it only works when the engine is over 170F and cruising. Ditching it without adjustments to the fuel you run or the chip will cause detonation.
You will need the PCM changed to get rid of the Code 32 as well, or your engine light will always be on when the car is hot.
Geez where I live, it's a $1500 fine for emissions systems tampering
and the EGR reduces ping by aiding in cylinder filling by adding an inert gas (exhaust) that doesn't burn, increasing the ability to pack more actual air into the cylinder (with the exhaust component) without adding to the combustible mix with already too high compression with cat-pee gas that we are forced to run.
Removed mine from my 86 because I couldn't stand that pipe that ran from right exh manifold to the intake. Mickey Mouse. It can be worked around. You won't see one on a race engine.

No emissions here, never will be for these older year cars. Inert gas, cam overlap does that.
