406 takes Wally!
I have this incredible urge to crow about our C4's. Saturday, here in Redding, Ca, my DD took the Wally in Sportsman! I think my pic will be in National Dragster in a couple weeks! Now I know how a celebrity like Brad Pitt must feel! Wait a minute, I can just turn the key off and walk away. Brad still has to listen to "honey-do's"
Okay, enough of that, here's the story. 406/SR/LPE 219/TPIS long tubes/AFR 195 street heads, 2000 stall/beefed 700R(adjusted to shift at 5600)/BFG drag radials at 12-1/2 lbs/D36 with 2.59. I deep staged and cut mid to low Oh-something lights at just off-idle and the car ran 1.90 60-footers and low 12.7's at 107-108 all day. If I torque up the converter much over idle I red light, so just stab and go.
Over the last couple years I have read some big power and drag performance numbers on CF, certainly bigger than mine, but in bracket racing, the fastest is not the key: a good RT, knowing how to dial in the car and a little treachery when called for is the rule. But the faster car certainly has an advantage in my opinion. I raced two faster (one was a low-12 snowmobile
in the final!) and 3 slower cars.I have followed CF posters closely and picked up a lot of good things. My idea for a DD is big torque with moderate HP. Mainly this is just an "attaboy" to those of us who are a bit slower but still want to play.
There is hope for us and I have the Wally to prove it!
Oh, and HUGE kudos and accolades to TJ Wong for the dyno tune and Chip a couple months ago. Plus the drive to Portland was pretty. The car gets 24 mpg on freeway and is clean for Ca emissions. Everything that shows has an EO#
I am a happy (old) boy!

We had the most peculiar results on the dyno. That day it only registered 275 HP and 300 torque.
We never did figure that one out. TJ's shop is full of very fast Vettes, several supercharged (plus one Cobra roadster). We were pretty discouraged so did not bother to print out a dyno run. The dyno that day had to be right. TJ is too good to have a bogus dyno. Plus that morning another guy with a very fast 383" C4 (mid 11's on same dyno w/385 HPat rear wheels) stopped by and we all scratched our heads. All I can say is the car has been running better and better every time I take it to the drags (the engine has only been in the car since July and it was Aug when I went to TJ's). I drive it pretty easy around town so maybe it is just break in? It is also possible the computer and the chip were getting to know each other for the first time at WOT (my theory). Following that by a couple weeks, was the first time in the 12's was a 12.98 followed in the next round by 12.767 at around 104 (I only ran it 2 rounds that evening) at our Street Legals.
Then I took it to Samoa Championships (on the coast) in September and it was solid in the 12.79-12.80 at 104. Their Sportsman class over there has a 13.0-minimum rule for Sportsman, so I dialed 13.0 and fender raced. The last 3 of us were all dialed at 13.0, so we were all driving blind against each other, but I won that one too! I'll tell you, big low end torque coupled with oh-lights is a wonderful thing!
You are right about the air. A typical day or night over here is 2,000 to 2500 corrected. The air here is quite dry (10 to 20% Relative humidity is common with 29.50's BP, but 80's+ temp). My exhaust is TPIS 1-3/4" coated long tubes, a hi-flow Dyno-max cat and 2-1/2" Flowmaster cat-back dual exhaust. Real ordinary.

I really enjoy seeing corvettes win at the track especially when they are CF members.

I think what is holding the ET's back is primarily a tight converter with 2.59 rear end ratio. And I have out of the box 195-Street AFR's, no porting. I think deep staging costs about a tenth too. I have a D44 w/3.07 on the way. That should be good for 1-2 tenths, mainly in the 60-footers. Judging from its current numbers, I think it would register much better on the dyno than it originally did. Incidentally, in the final round, it was a full 2 mph faster and .06 quicker at 1/2-track (87.84mph at 8.104)than it has ever been. I ended up with the dash rug in my face at the 1-2 shift with the snomobile hot on my hind end. What a blast!
One of these days when I get thoroughly waxed by some lesser being such as a Mustang, I might even go to about a 2800-3000 Precision converter. Keep in mind, I put about 15,000 miles a year on this car, plus Cal emissions is something I have to live with.
Thank all of you for the congrats. It truly feels wonderful! I will have someone slip it into the coffin with me when my time comes. Maybe I can even get a big hole dug and get planted in my C4 as well.

Good to see some positive results considering all of the heart break you had to endure before getting your combination sorted out.
What a great way to start, scoring back to back wins at Samoa and now at your home track in Redding and a Wally no less.
Still waiting to get some decent drag radials on my 87 as this new 383 stroker is really a tire cooker and until I can get some traction, this will be a waste of time.
I built this thing with the intention of keeping it smog legal and all of the pieces such as the Edelbrock heads and Crane cam have EO#s so I hope it will pass the smog test when it goes in next month.
Having to retain the factory exhaust system will have it's draw backs I'm sure but the recent addition to a larger Magnaflow Cat Back system should help it breathe better. Another draw back is the factory TPI system and it's runners so until I can change those, it will certainly limit me as well as the factory throttle body.
To date, best run of a 14.20 at 102 mph slipping and sliding and this with a stock chip.
At least I have the 3.07 gears so that is one area I won't have to worry about.
In time, I just may have to drive up to Vancouver Washington and pay TJ Wong a visit unless I can find someone else here in the San Francisco Bay Area who can duplicate his work.
Just a reminder that we have a ET Bracket race at Infineon set for Sunday, November 26 and at only 15 feet above sea level and on the Northern tip of the San Francisco Bay, your car should haul here.
Besides, I just might drag you into the announcers booth with me and put you to work with Dave Hoover and myself...lol
Really happy for you and congratulations once again...
Yeah, a decent set of drag radials will probably take an easy 1/2 sec off your times.
I have read nothing but good things about TJ Wong and just wish he had a business here in the San Francisco Bay Area as this place is Corvette Heaven.
As far as the announcers booth at Infineon being heated, we have all of that and much more including close circuit TV as well as access to cable.
The offer still stands should you want to come down and sit with me in the booth.
Really happy for you, just hope my end results will be as positive yet I won't be expecting your numbers with the smaller 383 combination.
Thank you. I will be the really good looking bald guy. Oh, wait a minute, I got a free hat too that I am wearing! Hahahaha! This is sooo fun!

......I would have expect about a second better with that combo
