i have a 94 i got my car inspected and i asked the same question and the guy told me exactly" if your cars older than a 97, we dont check the exhaust system" so i didnt really think twice about it, but id cut em off and just use stainless steel clamps when applying ur new exhaust... pepsi and aluminum foil works the best id ever see. pour it on and rub baby, comes right off. wont scratch a thing
I do have an air compressor, but no attachments that I can imagine would help remove the mufflers.. What did you have in mind?
Thanks
What I did on mine was use an air powered cutoff wheel, aka "whizzer wheel", and simply slotted the muffler's inlet pipe where it slips over the rear Y. Just be "gentle" with the depth of the cut since you want to only slot the outer pipe. That will allow you to remove it even it is kinked badly from overtightening the clamp. They also make a muffler splitter bit for air chisels that will split the pipe while it drives it off. That'll work too, but usually boogers up the other pipe a little.
I got the car like this, so can't tell you much about it, except a mechanic at a vette shop told me the system had about as little resistance as you can get. I like the unusual chrome tips and the lack of ugly metal boxes just under the bumper as with other systems, and of course the sound. This one was done properly as the tips extend just slightly beyond the rear bumper which cuts resonance. You notice when getting on the gas it's like you 'get away from the sound' out the back, I assume because the sound waves are being projected further back behind the car as you floor it.
It does pop and gurgle as you change down and come off the gas which always makes me smile..
I would have got long tubes by now but they are illegal in Cali. The reason is they require changing the position of the original cats, which is not allowed. Nothing to do with emission levels. Did someone say they don't look at exhaust on cars older than '97? This might change my mind then
yeah well i got it inspected in a hick town in NC, normal insoections coast 30-40 and the guy only charged me around 10 cause he said they dont check emissions on cars older than 97, so i gues its not illegal around me to have mufflers. but damn it sounds GOOOOOOD. could be louder of course. when i was stock, i wanted an exhaust anythign diff than stock, now that i got it, i want louder, headers maybe i dunno
Just wanted to say thanks to everybody for the discussion and sound clips....just installed muffler eliminators on my 88 C4 L98 auto, bone stock. Nice sound....I am 35 and like a healthy sounding motor but getting too old for the 'drone'. All stock with the eliminators (non-chambered) from Corvette Central for $160 shipped sounds great. Nice low fiarly quiet idle, reasonable levels at mild throttle positions, and a nasty growl at WOT. Perfect as far as I am concerned! Thanks again...
