Default HELP !!! Speedometer recalibration

Let me say up front that I am very low-tech and easily frustrated. That said, I just bought a 1994 C4 automatic that has had 3.73 ratio gears installed that replaced the stock 3.07s.

I've read many of the posts here about re-programming, laptops, burners, scanners and so on. I don't have any of that stuff, don't understand much of what is said and really don't want to do anything to the car but get the speedo and odometer to read correctly.

I've checked with the shops around Austin that do this stuff and no one seems to know how it's done or what equipment is required.

My question is this--what does it take (scanner or process) to re-program my computer to make the MPH read correctly without having to have a laptop, all that other stuff and the knowledge/skill that is talked about in the scan/tune threads on this board?? Or is there a shop or a person in the Austin area that does this kind of thing??

My computer # is 88961148 and is a re-manufactered unit. The car runs fine and does nothing wrong except reads about 18% fast on MPH and odometer readings.

Another alternative of course, is to change back to 3.07 gears but I really like the way this car runs with the 3.73s. It still gets 21-22 actual mpg if I drive it conservatively.

I greatly appreciate any help that folks on this board can offer.

Thanks, Jack.

If you don't have a laptop, look for a Hypertech Power Programmer on ebay. This will allow you to change the speedo, fans settings, and a so-so power program. You should be able to pick one u for about $150. Also, make sure it is for a 94-95.

Or, drive to STL, and I'll do the changes for free.

Thanks Mike--you've told me more than anyone else. Can I buy a new Hypertech Power Programmer or are they only available used?? I'll check ebay now. Thanks again, Jack.

Yes, you can buy the Hypertech tuners new. Think they are around $350.

You may want to try a WTB in the for sale section of this forum.

That's an even better idea. Tom can also do ma few other performance tweaks to your PCM. He sent me a program for a 94 A4 with 3.73's that performed really well.

Default Got it done !!

Thanks to you folks who put me onto a way to change my speedometer/odometer to read correctly with 3.73 gears from the original 3.07. I bought a new Hypertech Power Tuner from Auto Anything and it worked great.

Now I need to know how to VIN unlock it so I can sell it to someone else who needs it. Do any of you know what to do or where to send it to get that done??

Thanks, Jack.

You can only VIN unlock the Hypertech PP by returning your car to stock. It can only be used on one car.
