Im stuck at work so cant check it now...but drivers window works but passenger stopped half way and wont continue up.....I cant hear the motor turning...and I just replaced the belt 3 weeks ago...any ideas as to what I should check at lunch.
Sounds exactly like a broken ribbon. The passenger side of my 84 broke 3 times in 9 months. Does the 86 have a ribbon? I thought GM ditched those in 86..I dunno. I know 84-85 had them. Anyway it would be worth your while to upgrade to the newer regulator ecklers has them at 200.00
Ive been lucky...I replaced the ribbons 5 years ago and theyre stillworking fine.
I think I got mine from MAD or someone, they were built of thicker plastic then the originals.
One thing you must do is make sure the track is perfectly clean of rust or grime, and lube the whole thing with alot of white lithium grease from the can you brush on.
The spray on lubes dont last.
What I did when my ribbon snapped, I took the door panel off and I lifted the windowto the top by hand and used a small worm style clamp and tightened it down very tight on the slider/aligning pole under the window to keep it up for a few days before I got the stuff I needed.
They stopped using the ribbon in late 86...they began using the improved regulators on the convertiblesin mid year.Us guys with the coupes got the left over ribbons so GM didnt have to waste moneyon all the ones stockpiled in the wharehouse.
Get your improved regulators from the junk yards if you want to upgrade and save money.
Re: Quick help...window wont go up (Bill's86Coupe)
Man, oh man, I was faced with this same dilemma. In 1986 the coupes had the ribbon track, and the verts had the better unit used until 96. The ribbon on my driver side broke, so I went on Ebay, bought a NEW late model unit for $45, and it bolted right in (alignment was a pain) . I also put dynamat in the door's interior, and then the quiet door panels that MAD/Ecklers/Zip offers. The window is so fast now! Amazing. IT is a worthwhile investment, believe me.
