Did the shop use gaskets or silicon to seal eveything up?

Reason I ask is this: when I got my motor from LPE and had to take it apart they used silicon and not gaskets. I called them and they then said to use a gasket so I did, now I'm thinking of going back to the silicon next time I tear it down. I have an idle problem and I think it's due to a vac. leak.

We went the RTV route. Gaskets are really expensive, for really not that much. I wouldn't use RTV for the runners to the base, but for the plenum and plenum top RTV red all the way!

With these, btw, vacuum leaks are a huge problem, we had several and that was one of the reasons for the runaway amount of time spent under the hood.

Hey Big_How and Kool88vette,

Where did those SuperRam lids come from and who makes them? Are those lids prone to leaks more than the stock ribbed lid?

The reason I ask is because I am interested on one I saw for auction, but it has a cover similar to yours which is flush without the ribbed lines. I just worry about it being weaker than the original cover.

This is the link to the SR I am interested in.

The smooth billet lids were an option when you bought a Superam from Accel or Lingenfelter. They were about $85.00 extra. When I got my first lid which was the standard ribbed version, it leaked. I pulled it all apart and put it back together wth silicone. It still leaked. I took the lid off and held it to glass. It was warped. I called the Accel rep and tore him a new one. A day later a brand new billet lid with a new gasket set arrived by Fed EX overnight. I was not charged for the parts or shipping. I did have to send the bent lid back. I would not be afraid of the deal because of the lid. The billet lid is better. My SR has been fine for over a year. Hope you get it. I have a feeling that a lot of forum members that read this will now be bidding.

Has anyone ever seen one of these SR covers chromed? I have a ribbed one and have it polished but would like to get it chromed. Reading the above post has me alittle worried about the ribbed one leaking. I have a idle problem that I'm guessing is a vac. leak and currently have a gasket in there but when I got it, it was siliconed.
