I was going to replace the power steering pump. I unscrewed the bottom Alternator bracket bolt when I lift up the alternator to move it out of the way, when I noticed that the bottom of the alternator was still in place. Not sure how long it has been broke but it sucks. I go to advance to get a replacement and they give me one but all the electrical hookups are 180 degrees off. I am having a hard time finding one now. The ground wire is long enough but the 3 wire connector is too sort to move to the top.
So I have 3 choices:
1. Find the correct alternator and wait the time it takes to get it.
2. Cut the three wires and make extensions for them so that it is longer and can fit the top.
3. Take a part the new alternator and try and move the front 180 degrees so everything matches up.
What should I do? The first two I can handle but I have never taken a part an alternator to know if what I suggest is possible.
Thanks in advance for your input...

I agree with everyone else here. There should be a lot of parts places that know what they are selling you.
Last ditch effort will be to take it apart and rotate it to the correct psition.
I bet it would take less time to remove the 4 bolts and spin the front half 180*, that it would to return it and find another.
So it is possible to rotate the front 180 and it still line up and work. I am going to order one today from autozone but if it has the same problem then I may try and rotate it or just make some extentions. I just want to drive my car!
Go to O'Rilley auto parts and get the correct one that has the lifetime warranty! I'd steer clear of AutoZone parts. Not the best quality from what I've seen. You get what you pay for.

True dat. For those of us with early C4s it is wise to take your old alternator with you when you get a new one. Saves on a core charge trip and it insures you are getting the correct unit.

This is where I got the last one and the casing broke off the bottom. And to be honest I was planning on taking it back to deal with them but I have had nothing but had trouble with their customer service. It seems the store I go to hires idiot wannabe street racers, who only want to race me everytime I go in and have no desire to actually do their job.

If they sold you the original then it is time to go see them and force them to replace it. If they give you a hard time, ask for the manager, then the regional manager. The regional guy, if it gets that far, will satisfy your warranty claim. I would press this point. If they sold it to you with a warranty... take it back and make them do the work. Don't let them off the hook.

86 and newer use CS series alternators...can NOT ''clock'' these units...85 and older SI-xx series can be ''clocked'', but the newer CS-xxx alts have less internal clearance and ''simplified'' machining during manufacture that does not permit assembly of the halves in other than original orientation.
I got a new alternator from Autozone, Duralast Gold, and of course the connector was a problem, so I purchased a new connector from Autozone for $6.99 and cut off the old one, which had broken anyways, and soldered a new one on to it with shrik wrap tubing. If I did it again I would have used two pieces of the shrink tubing. I now have plenty of clearance and the connector is sound once again.
