Default '89 vette engine removal

I'm wondering what's the best way to pull the engine? From the top or from the bottom?

Does anyone know of a good right up? I've done a few searches but didn't really find anything.

From the top without the trans.
However easiest to remove C beam to drop rear of trans as top bellhousing bolts PITA to reach.Once trans lowered can use extention bar to undo top bolts.
Remove dist , gives more angle before block hits firewall.
Don't forget to undo convertor unless you like big mess on floor.
Taking the wiper motor off gives more clearance for straight lift up..
No need to remove hood
Reverse for install.

Top is recommended as Rodj stated.. along with his other comments.

You should pick up a FSM or even one of the cheap Chilton.. they have step by step instruction as to what to remove and re-install..

From the top

Probably one of the easiest vehicles you will ever swap an engine in (except for all of the crap bolted to the engine )

I find it easier/faster to drop the trans first. Also as above remove the windshield wiper motor or you will break the black plastic cover/controler pulling the engine.

Thanks for the advise and the pics, I'm just getting ready to start on it now. I'm hoping all goes as easy as it looks.

I just did this about two weeks ago, I took off the hood, unbolted the tranny and out it came from the top. I put the new engine in the same way, thru the top. Just take your time, dont rush.

I've run into another road block. This car has a nanual trans so just unbolting the trans. and converter are out.

What's the best way to remove the torque arm from the trans. and rear?

This has turned out to be the worst engine to pull I've ever done.

Leave the tranny there unless your planning on rebuilding it. Look at my pic, motor with bell and out.

Guess I should have looked at the pic a little closer. I already dropped the trans so I guess now all I need to do is hook up the chain and pick this thing up.

I'm thinking the really hard part is going to be remembering were all the little brakets go when reinstalling it. I may have to buy a book.

Thanks for the help.

A digital camera is your best friend. I'm sure when the time comes, you will get members helping with their own pics.
