that will be a problem,i guess it's a crap shoot.do you know where they are prone to crack at,or a way to check for cracks at the sellers house.
deck ...between the cylinders...between the upper "steam hole" and the head bolt hole abt a 1/4'' above it...with heads off, a bright light and sober eye (leaves me out) will see a "thin black line"...i have two 400 blocks with no crack and 4 with.
some claim the crack is not significant and claim to have run "cracked" blocks with no issues
I'm in the process of finding one right now. Cheapest one here is $400 for a 509 casting and one of the mains need replacing. $100 for a 400 is a steal, so GET IT!
I had a 400bb in a caprice wagon, it even said 400 in the grill.
Chances are that was a small block. The 402 big blocks were sold and badged as a 396. Oldsmobile had a 400, also. Then again, there is always the 400M and the 400B.
My 3/4 ton 4X4 has a 400 SBC in it from the factory. I have a 400 SBC "509", bare block with high nickle casting numbers, and another 4.125" bore block as a project. Where do you think SBC, 427s, 434s, and 454s come from? Certainly not from a 4.00" bore 350 block.
I will pick it up tomarrow night,he was asking 300.00 but needs the cash,so i'm getting it cheap.hope it's not cracked,I will look it over good before buying it.
my friend has 5 400 blocks that are all in gr8 shape, not sure if he wants to sell any but if you really want one PM me and ill ask him, i dont think he would let one go for less than $500... not sure i can ask him .
