Well I was driving my 93 LT1 today, and the car just died. It would not start up again. I have been noticing a thick smell of gasoline in the air all day while I've been driving. I didn't think much of it at the time. Checked for codes, got none. I have a fuel pressure gauge installed in the engine bay, and I checked it with the key to the on position. The reading says zero fuel pressure. However, I can hear the fuel pump turn on for a few seconds when I turn the key to on. There don't appear to be any major leaks. Any idea what things I should check for first?
Take off the fuel door so you can get to the hoses on the pump/sending unit. Remove the fuel out hose, turn key and see if anything comes out (get assistant). Then you know if you have a problem in the tank or the rest of the car. (Attach another hose from the tank output to a can so fuel does not go everywhere).
If no fuel pressure then problem is with pump, check valve or pickup. If there is pressure and flow, then possible fuel filter. However they usually don’t just dead quit, they get slow and restrict flow.
I would rather remove the pump and tank unit then that darn fuel filter any day of the week, this is my logic. As for the fuel smell, that might answer itself when you find this problem.
I've been thinking it might be the FPR. For the last few weeks I've had a problem with starting the car, where I have to slam the gas for a few seconds before it will start. Then it idles poorly or not at all for about 2 minutes, then it runs fine from there. However, whenever I was really low in gas, the car would start right up and idle fine for some reason. I noticed this several times when I was almost out of gas. Then I'd fill it up again and the symptoms would return. But now it won't start at all.
