Most common problem is a weak battery which causes no start because it wont turn over, or turn to slow. If totally dead, then nothing may not work. Some batteries won’t hold a charge for a long time as it should.
A battery that has a shorted cell, can damage the alternator, or voltage regulator.
There are other variations of what problems they can cause. But damaging dash lights, A/C or anything else is probably unlikely. However an alternator putting out to much voltage can do some damage and that all depends on many factors.
Check your battery voltage display on the speedometer using the gauges button. If your in the 13 to 14.5 volt range that is OK (engine running). If the car starts good and the voltage is good to, look elsewhere for the problem.
well here is what happend car was running fine on a battery charger i pull the battery charger off the car and it starts running bad and the dash goes blank i turn the car off and let it sit and then i go to start the car back but it does not have enough power to start. but the dash is working again.
The engine not starting sound like a bad battery. I assume when you say not start, it means is won’t turn over to start. But even with a bad battery when the engine is running, the alternator should be putting out enough voltage to keep all running properly.
I would at least start measuring the charging voltage which should be about 14 volts. Before I did this I would charge the battery first and to see if it will take a normal charge.
It almost sounds like the charging system is not working (alternator), and the car is only running off the battery. If the battery was discharged, it would not run well and have the problems you described.

Take the battery out and go have it load tested. It sounds like it is bad. You could have other problems but until the battery is checked it wil be more difficult to tell. I will tell you that it is hard on your alternator to continually try to charge a low battery.
Why not start eliminating possibilities? Pull the battery, take it to a parts store and have it tested/charged, generally free. If the battery checks out OK drive the car to the same store to have the charging system checked, another freebie.

Your vette was alive due to the battery charger supplying all the power. Once removed, your alternator should have been supplying the power to keep evrything alive. That didn't happen so you may have a bad alt or wiring/connection problem to go along with your dead battery.
i also noticed my check asr light is on and it was not before. i wounder if this is part of the bad alt or what. for every little problem it seems like the car just gets more problems than just the basic bad part
byedan, from your short description it sounds like your car starts. It needs a good battery to start. It would not with a shorted cell. Before you start with steps three or four on the troubling shooting chart start at step one. If you don't have a $6 multi-meter from Harbor Freight pick up one. Read the battery voltage first. 12.6 Volts would be great but 12.3 or so it should start. If it does start and run check the voltage running. It should be up a little over 14 after a few minutes. If you decide to take the battery to have the capacity checked make sure it is fully charged. Later! Frank
