Many cars use a single CAT that is located in a similar position so you have reason to be optimistic. To be sure, you might want to start a new thread on that question (since many won't look in here).

Also, it could depend on the visual inspection laws of your state. According to Federal Guidelines, altering the factory configuration of emissions equipment is considered a "no-no" -- even if you keep it clean. So, it might depend on how your state interprets that. Ask so local shops/inspectors, etc... to be sure

You may even want to ask the question in your regional forum?

Hi,

I understand the visual, however, I am more concerned with the emission numbers (limits). After looking under my car and some quick measurements I think I will be able to run dual cats. I am looking foward to getting started. I will update as I go along.

Thanks for your help!!

Default I didn't forget about this thread

Hi guys,

I'm sorry I haven't been more forthcoming with details on my install. I had to stop on the vette and repair a waterfall leak inside my daughters' Impala. I've also been concerned with heat abatement. It seems the method I was gonna use was a bad idea. I can tell you I now have the driver side done as the bracing I made is finally complete.
I read where one of the guys wasn't sure of my ultimate goal on this. My goal was to anchor the brace from the alt to the engine. My problem is that I tend to overthink things.
As a note, I ended up going to my local dealer parts and bought a new gasket for the oil cooler adapter. The part number is;

14087586

I got this # from Ecklers. He was sure he had the best deal, but he was wrong. Ecklers wanted about $24 for the seal plus $8 to ship. I got it from MR.Goodwrench for $24 total and picked it up the next day. One final word on this seal. You can prolly take it out and go to WalMart and compare it to the seal on some other oil filter. I'm pretty sure that's all it is. It'll just take some time gettin' jiggy with the oil fiters at wally-world to find one to interchange with. Once you get your Oil Cooler Adapter off, you'll notice there are two bolts with 1" tall heads that locate the adapter. You need to exchange these for standard-head bolts so you can position the adapter where the water coolant lines don't contact the header.

In looking at the pass. side, I'm pretty sure I'm gonna have to pull the starter. Also, when I mentioned heat abatement, one of the prime concerns will be where #8 tube exits the head and turns past the A/C housing on the firewall.

As for the collector hookups, I'm pretty sure I'll end up with a set of 2-1/2" collector rings and some mandrel bent pipe being fabbed into a Y going to the catalytic. One thing I tried was to cut and reweld one of the expanders at an angle to make the turn toward the cat. Bad Idea! Now I have one expander and one piece of scrap to remind me how bad that idea was. On the driver side, it's gonna take about a 30* angle to make the turn. That's why I'm thinking it's gonna take a 2-1/2" collector ring and the mandrel bend to get there.
Before I get into the remaining side, I need to obtain some heat sleeves and some other stuff.
That's all I have for now. I'll try to be more vigilant about getting on the forum and staying in touch.

I'm sure this goes without saying, but pics please!!! I'm a visual kind of guy. lol I have the Corsa exhaust, I'm looking at shortening the outlet pipes on the resonator, moving it aft and connecting my Random bullet cats directly to it. Then fabbing the necessary pipes from the headers to the cats.

I Emailed brian and he sent the following advice:

There is a venturi affect there at the collector. Yes fab a 3" Y pipe then 2.5" true X Magnaflow connector and duel 2.5" glass packs 24" long where the converter was. 2.5" pipes to the mufflers I use Magnaflow single in and duel out. I sent a couple of picture.
Thanks again for your purchase of Vette Tech headers

The pictures do not show much but the view of #1 a pretty white street car and #2 the set up from the Dana back

This makes my life simpler, as I have the 2-1/2" SS Y pipe already. Now to make a working product.

When I emailed Brian after learning there would not be room for front cats, here's one comment worth passing on to you guys....

[Quote from Brian@VetteTech] "I have used 2 of these [bullet cats] side by side in the middle of the car where the stock cat is... then glass packs on those. I found out that you need to put the glass packs in front of the cats because the cats get so hot the heat burns out the glass packs prematurely."

So, it seems you should not put bullet cats immediately in front of glass packs (resonators). I hadn't thought of this but it sounds reasonable that it's hot right behind a cat.

Brian was suggesting this back-to-back combo because I can't put anything in the front or rear section of the car. I can only add these components in the mid-section. (Probably not an issue for anyone else w/o side pipes. But it is useful info).

I'm curious how that will work with your side pipes?

I can't visualize the plumbing under the car?

Look here.

Flow could be sans turns but isn't as bad as it looks. 3.5" x 1.65" rectangular tubing get ID equavelent to 2.75" pipes. Turns are slow and final section bleeds across.

Manufacturer said +17hp over stock catback and good to 450hp.

BTW: This system was discontinued in 2003.

I see.

Thank you.

The ground clearance issue had me puzzled.

Neat looking system .

Well, it would have been done, today except for the fact that the bolts sent are 27/64" not 3/8"

A word of caution. Check them before twisting.

That would've been tough, 27/64 is too big to go very far into the 3/8-16 threads in the head. I wonder if they sent him some sort of 10.5mm metric bolt? 27/64 is unusual for a fastener size.

I finally got some of the heat reflective material I need, so in a day or so I'm gonna get going on this again. I got the pass side off and my nature of, "thinking about it way too much," is nearly satisfied. Had to work thru the w'kend, so when I get off my lazy butt, I'll be hard at it.

Duh, I read this too fast while at work. I was thinking they were too long and would bottom out! Guess my weekend was too short!

But, now for the $64,000 question. Do you have a camera?

No I did not strip the heads.

I'm old and ****. I dry run everything and found the issue.

Put a Mic. on it 27/64's sure enough.

Brian got right in touch and is sending a new set.

He needs the old one's back to make the point with his supplier.

I am sure he is freaked right now!.

Hi,

I am almost ready with the pass/side. When I get the header on I will post some photos. I will try to work on it this week. So far, all is coming apart with no issues.

I'm thinking they are some forieng mark. They were dead nuts on 27/64's.

I pity the newbie who cranks on the torque wrench. They are small enounh to "start" and I'm guess your could get three turns before they lock up.

Well, that was painful. Hardly worth it?

At least I know how, now.

Old exhausts. Look close. That sheet metal is over four tubes that collect at the down pipe.

The Y pipe is 2-1/2" to a free flow. Worked pretty good.

The Driver's side is easy. Disconnect the Intermediate shaft and it's a breeze from the bottom.
