Yep.

I'm hopin' I haven't cooked my PCM.

I got some plastic burn smell again. Happens occasionally when I roll; started after the gasket swap back in May. First I thought it was some degreaser that I pumped onto the back of the block, cause I didn't unclip any harnesses to fall on hat parts.

Then the SES lit up on Father's day. 3 history codes. I was pretty sure then I had fouled harness connectors from pumpin' so much Gunk degreaser, or I just had a cookin' harness.

Then some more history codes. ALL history. And the ICC circuit checked good, except for the PCM - couldn't test it. Even went beyond the PCM, but that was a waste of time.

Then the PCM people said mine was so messed up they wouldn't guarantee a repair. The new one was good for 4 trips, and I COULDN'T EVEN TELL IT WAS MISSING. I smelled the rich burn rotten egg smell, pulled up mileage, and it had tanked. Got home, plugged in, and got codes.

Time to pull the harness and inspect.

Damn.

This is really gonna' be ugly - gettin' the harness out to inspect.

Any tips? It will have to include the harness for VSS H72, right 02 sensor H64. ICC harness branches off ABOVE THE DIRTY PART OF THE HARNESS. THAT PART IS JUST BAFFLING ME, UNLESS ANOTHER GROUND FOR THE ICC GOES DOWN TO THE OTHER HARNESS. I did NOT see one in the FSM schematic.

Back to the search - lookin' for a hot spot in the harness, that trips up history codes when it gets hot.

And it is gettin' uglier by the minute, with no clue clues in sight.

Has anybody done a wirin' harness with the motor in the car? If you had to pull the motor, I don't wanna' know about it.

Anybody know how the connector at the arrow comes off? Is it multiple blade connectors? Snap clips anywhere on it? I can see nothing...

All togther now.....

This is the song that never ends,
As it goes on and on my friend.
Some people started singing it, not knowing what it was,
And they'll continue singing it forever just because ->
The next line is the first line repeated, and the song repeats ad infinitum.

Sorry couldn't help myself I thought I would try and add some humor.

Seriously good luck you might wanna give "Mikey the Torch" a call to give you a hand

1 / 12th of a turn, flip the wrench, another one twelfth of a turn, lather, rinse, repeat.

This is a body-on-frame restoration.

This is pulling the battery tray. We're still pulling the harness to find a cooked or chafed area that is tripping H41 ICC, H64 O2 fault, and H72 VSS fault.

I have an oil leak on the passenger side. I cannot tell where it is, it is not making it to the ground. The intake is freshly sealed May, so I know it ain't there.

It can't come from the head. Right? It is running perfectly, till the ICC circuit fault trips up. Even as it trips, I can hardly tell it is in fault mode.

The oil leak cannot be fouling the ICC circuit. I think it could be causing the heated O2 fault, and maybe the VSS fault. IS THIS POSSIBLE???

I'm pulling the right cat pipe, starter, and ex manifold, to access the harness and find the leak. Any tips???

Is the VSS harness on the right side of the tranny?

Man, stop diggin' around in there, your only making things worse for yourself!

I assume that you've checked the valve covers, but does anything screw into the block on that side. Where do you first start seeing evidence of a leak?

Yeah - what's up there Clay...

I really need that FSM back from Chevy...

I got oil cookin' some sensors/connectors, OR connectors cookin on some other hot stuff. That's the smell I've noticed, and seen a hint of smoke with good light at night. That was what I suggested to you long ago, in a galaxy far away, when you said you got smoke whiffs...

Neither of those tho' could be lightin' up the ICC fault, unless a ground is shared with the lower harnesses (ICC harness is totally up top).

So the ICC fault is on hold while I examine the leak / other 2 H codes. If there's no common ground with the lower harnesses O2, VSS, it's either opti (although it is NOT in the ICC 41, 42 FSM diagnostic flow chart (it IS in the schematic tho')).

???

Two thoughts...

1) ICC could be the wiring harness? I remember seeing threads about the Opti harness going bad...I know you've spent a good amount so far, but for $35 it might be worth the investment.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/95-97...spagenameZWDVW

2) Looking at AutoBlog, and their "track ****" BMW 318i (see attachment near the bottom of "Day 1"), I'm thinking there could be a sensor that's really bad and jumping the electrical system...

That's a possibility...I'm having intake manifold leaks that seem to go down the front and back of the engine. Not big at all, but they are there, and slow enough to dirty the engine but not leak on the floor. Aside from the Opti, are there any other sensors that could be fouled by oil mounted to the front of the engine.

I also go back to the Opti...could it be operating fine, but through either the vent line from the intake manifold, or from seepage, get oil/dirt/water/debris in it that boils at around 210 and causes ignition problems?

I myself am half tempted to rip out the stock Opti, CLEAN THE SH17 OUT of it, and bolt it back on to see what's up. Huge job, I know...but so far you haven't been able to "buy" your way out of this problem...

I told blankman to put his multimeter on circuit 239/210, to monitor current on that circuit for fluctuations.

When I did that bypass test, I checked static voltage. I think you also should try that test there Clay...
