I have a 86 and 2 problems. When I go to start it it starts and then stalls....This happens for 3 or 4 times and then it stays running and idols fine. After that it stalls everytime I put it in gear it will stall out. Any hints??
If your looking for something to pull the codes from the ECM, all you need is a paper clip to jump terminals "A" and "B", on the ALDL connector.
Jump terminals, turn ignition to "RUN" and then watch the "SES" light on the info panel. http://members.shaw.ca/corvette86/No...it%20Check.pdf
I should add that the SES light will flash on and off, to give the codes.
Example- flash-pause-flash-flash is code 12(ECM is communicating)
Example-flash-flash-flash-pause-flash-flash-flash-flash is code 34.

oh...its a auto trans
Sounds like your minimium idle speed is set too low. GM had a service note to make sure the idle speed was at least 450 RPM in drive with the IAC completely closed so you did not experience stalling when the car was put in drive.
Basically you do this:
-Warm car up
-Jump the a-b termanuals on the diagnostic connector
-Turn the key on
-Disconnect the IAC at the throttle body
-Turn key off
-pull out jumper at diagnostic connector
-Start car and see if it will idle at 450 to 500 RPM in drive
-If RPM is too low adjust the set screw that holds the throttle blades open out farther until the desired RPM is reached.
-Readjust throttle position sensor to .52 volts at idle
-Reconnect IAC and car should not stall any more when going into gear.
Awesome info!! Thanks! Any suggestions on a halfway decent diagnostic tool? Most of the ones I have seen are from 1996 and newer...
Do you have a laptop computer? If so, I recommend Tunerpro (free) and a USB ALDL cable @$60. Another choice for reading the aldl datastream is winaldl (also free). You will still need the aldl cable which will also allow you to read codes and datalog the info using your laptop computer. There is also info on this site about constructing your own aldl cable if your handy w/a soldering iron.
yep....A & B are on the top row the ones furthest to the right (passenger side) correct??
Yes, you are correct. If you just checking for codes, leave everything connected like it should. You put a piece of wire/paperclip whatever, in ports A and B. Turm the key so just the ignition is on. Watch the check engine light. it will Blink 1 time pause and then blink 2 times ( this is a code 12, means its reading correctly) and it will do this 3 consecutive times. Then if any codes are present they will flash now, ( i have a bad optispark which is a code 36 so after the 3 code 12's it will flash 3 times, pause and flash 6 times also doing this 3 times) then after it flashes the codes it will flash the code 12 three times again to indicate it has provided all codes. If it flashes 12 three times then 12 again 3 times you have NO codes set. To clear codes and check again remove the NEGITIVE battery cable, that will clear them. Hope this helps!!
