The driver's side rear window defog tab came adrift from the window at the solder joint AND the worn brittle wire broke BUMMER!
I took it for a repair but the fellow said he would not recommend a resolder as the glass may crack from the heat of the solder joint.
Any help on fixing this would be appreciated. AND what's involved in getting a new wire in situ?
Thanks
It may crack....but I doubt it the thing is tempered. You may want to use a heat gun on the glass to slowly bring the glass up closer to the temperature of what a soldering gun might be...then do the repair. I would not recommened you do the repair job with an exposure to cold weather/temperature.
i just resoldered both sides of mine on my 1992 coupe, no problems at all. It was about 2 months ago on a hotter day (mid 70s temps) and there was no problem. I wouldnt worry too much, that glass probably gets hotter being out in the sun all day than it does from a tiny point on the soldering iron!
Not trying to be funny here, but how hot does the window get with the defogger on, and that in only ten minutes?
Even if the defogger works only on a part of the window, as you see on some cars, that´s never caused a window to crack... I never seen it anyway.
Front windscreens otoh, can crack, when it´s very cold outside, and you put the defroster on max, it only warms up the lower portion of the glass, here I have seen some cases where the glass cracks, but only if there allready was a small damage/crack on/in the glass.
