If i wanted to go to my bolt shop and buy the bolts and nuts to lower my rear 1986 coupe, what size do i get. Is it (2) 9/16 x 10 inch bolts?

Go fo 11", it will give room for more adjustment. Fine thread would be best.

Original bolts are metric, 14 X 2 thread 192.5 mm. length , if you want longer ones 11" would be about 280 MM.

buy them online . I just went through this and tried to take the cheaper way out and buy them at a hardware store. Turned out to be a hassle. So for $19.99 and 6.99 shipping from Ecklers, they arrived in 3 days and did the job. The 10 inch bolts allowed me to lower the rear about 1.5 inches, but better yet, allowed me to even out the right and left sides of the rear.

If it were me, I'd get 11" or even 12" bolts. I have the kit from Mid America with 10" bolts, and one side is all the way at the bottom. It's pretty much at the height I want, but it CAN'T go any lower, and 1/2" or so might look good.

same thing here. I got the 10 inch bolts and have less than 1/2 inch thread left on the passenger side bolt. The drivers side bolt has alot more tread, but it has to stay like that in order to even out the sides.
Go with 11 or 12 inch bolts if you can.

I just went to hardware store looking for this 9/16 x 11 bolt. to lower my rear suspension. (1986 vette) the person dont know what I was talking about.

then he correct me and say I need 1/2 and 11" long.

then he show me the bold sample, that look just about the same sizes of what I was looking for, but 8" long. then he told me. that they dont carry that bolt on 11" long. but he give the name of another store that carry those bolt.

so before I go to that store. need to clarify.

Is 1/2 bolt dont sound to me as 9/16 bolt. maybe he is using other metric system.

can someone help me here

I just got grade 8 hardened threaded rod[I found the hardened rod at a specialty bolt supplier in town] , it's been a long time ago now I thought it was 1/2" 13 thread sized rod just get as close to stock metric size as you can. I bought new poly spring bolt cushions and the steel mount pockets used for the vette spring bolt [ vette brakes & products]and drilled center hole out to the rod dia. size, It was so close to the stock metric size I really didn't remove hardly anything. I cut them to 12" length and that length worked out great for me, threaded rod allows you to adjust it easily by just turning the nut in if you want the car higher. I welded a nut on the top of rod and painted the nut and used nyloc locking nuts and very thick washers on bottom. I had bought new factory bolts but they didn't have enough bolt length to adjust how uneven the car sat. I didn't want to wait till new bolts got shipped so I tried this and it worked out great for me,you should try it. I've driven it for years like this with no problems. Good luck

Be careful, a hardware store normally dont carry grade 8 or class 10.9 bolts. If you buy "regular" bolts for this they will snap off on the first turn your take.

I keep reading this and reading this. Something does not sound right a 9/16 bolt is hudge and does not seem right. If it were not so late I would run out and take a look but my quess is you need an 3/8 by 11 bolt or at most 7/16 by 11. I may be wrong but 9/16 seems way to large. You may want to dubble check before you buy.

I found it hard to find large bolts locally, but threaded rod was available locally.

I picked up this threaded rod from Acklands, but I'm sure you can find the same elsewhere. I welded a nut on the end and made them 11".

Profast'ners
ROD THREADED ALLOY PLT NC 9/16X36

Alloy national coarse threaded rod. Yellow dichromate finish with 180,000 to 200,000 PSI tensile strength. For high strength applications. Size 9/16 inch x 36 inch in length.

Yup 9/16" alittle bigger than stock but fit better IMHO.
