Well when I was at the track last night I picked up a set of used junk tires to use for mock up and also to help in sizing. I rolled them under and decided that I just had to take a few pictures. This car is going to look wicked when she is done!

Well I got the chance this afternoon and evening to go do a little work. I am happy with the results of tonight. Tonight I got out there, took the main hoop and set it in its spot with the two rear bars that go to the shock towers, and tacked them into place. Then I pulled it out of the car, and put it in the driveway to clean and weld.... Ok I tacked it, went to remove it and found one was not tacked, so I had to get it all squared and set again, and then tack it again before removing. Welded it, cleaned spots and welded some more till I had a good weld all the way around the down tubes, working first a small area on one, and going back and forth. Felt really good, and I can say looks pretty good too. I will still put some gussets on it, and all but that can be done a bit later. I then started cleaning up since I wanted to take a nap before going in to work tonight around midnight. I took some pictures, and then put it back in the car, and guess what, it fit, and nothing moved due to heat! It will come back out again and I need to clean the floor, and put in a couple of plates, and then weld the main hoop to the floor. I will then weld the halo, and set the front down tubes and weld them, and then start working on the dash and door bars. After that the support bars...

At work I am starting to get caught up and once it is all caught up and I am between projects, I am taking a week off, and the plans are to spend atleast 80% of my time out there and finish the welding, and sizing and all and atleast get the cage in. Who knows, I might even put in the tubs and start to finish the back and get it ready for its fuel cell, and move the battery and all. Lots of special stuff to make all that work!

Here are a few pics. Thanks to my wife, I even have some of me welding but I will only share a couple of them
Those are some BIG tires. What size are those?

Those tires are 32X16 /15 rim. They are only there for sizing, and I plan on trying to squeeze a set of 33X19 or 33X21.5 if I can get them in the wheel tubs I am going to put in.

Those are going to be some mean wheel tubs. 33" tall tire is crazy looking on a C4.

Hope to get better traction, and get out of the hole better with the wider tires. Plan on running a 3.70 or 3.50 rear gear if I can.... TH400 and a Twin Turbo 406 to power it all. And for turbo size it is a pair of Garrett 3788 turbos, and then intercooled, and meth injected.

When the oil pump went out and the motor started nocking, I had the idea that I was just going to rebuild the stock motor, and things got out of hand.... you know what happens when a bunch of motorheads starts talking.... It is going to take a long time to build since I am doing this entire thing out of pocket, and saving here and there for parts. I get side work here and there, and that helps a ton with the build because I do not have to budget out for parts, and I can just take what comes in, and figure out what needs bought, and go after a deal on something. When we get near the end of this, the parts are going to be harder to get deals on I am sure, and that will take some time as the most expesive stuff is still left to buy.

Thanks for the compliments, and as everyone reads this if you are contemplating something that I am doing and want more details, feel free to ask. Also if you want a better shot of something from the camera, or a different angle or anything again just ask.

Hi,
I've been thinking about doing something like your project in the future (drag Car), but my question is how to even get started understanding the geometry of the structure, how it will react when loaded, and the cost of it all. There is a guy on this forum who claims a very strong bolt in 9" ford setup for 5 grand. Why is all this necessary if something simpler will work? Please excuse my ignorance, but this is all just blowing my mind.....

Very cool project though...very cool..

Alot of this is not necessary, but once you talk about narrowing the back half of the car for wider tires (And I did that so that (1) I can get better traction, and (2) just for looks) you need to do a little more. When I am planning on near 1000 HP I need a cage that will withstand some of what I am going to pound at it, and also for safety. As for understanding how things need to go where... I have just done it a few times, and some of what I am doing is just from sheer trial and error.

Well it has been a little while since I updated and that is mostly because I have not done a thing to it. Luckily I am on Vacation this week, so I have been working a little on it. First I pulled out the hoop and downbar assembly, and welded a couple of gussets on each side. Then I went and looked at it in the car and should I weld it in or what.... Well that was easy.... NOT. I decided I needed a couple pieces of angle in there to beef it up a bit, and then was out of gas... as usual, get on a roll and need to run an errand. No matter as there was another errand I wanted to run. That took me to Morgan Utah. Met up with the nicest guy I have met in a while. He can even out talk me! Yep he has some cool cars, and was my contact for some really cool stuff for my car. He runs RAAM Audio, and has some great sound deadening stuff. I is thinner and light weight than Dynomatt, and to me with the top foam on it, it is even better. We will see. Before I go and put that hoop all the way in, I wanted to deaden under the trim pieces, and since it is so tight, I am going to have to install the trim pieces too. It is starting to go back together! Right now the glue is setting up on the top layer of material, and that stuff is the best. Really surprised me how well it does. Here shortly I am going to grind down the hoop enough to clear the trim pieces inside the car, and set it in there for sizing and tacking the halo. Once it is tacked, I will just slide it forward, and make all the welds and add a couple of gussets up there. Then slide it back and that part will get fully welded in. But first I must dig through the interior parts, and find the interior trip pieces, and also pull out the screws to hold it on. Once they are in I will be taking more pics I am sure, and will also be starting to see some real progress. I want to get this assembly done and the front bars done by the end of the week, and more if I can. Also plan on trying to do some of the other bars, so I can start to put it all back together. Then cut and install the tubs, and get some sheet metal for the interior parts I am going to make floor out of. Then more sound deadening, and then carpet the whole car! We are starting to make some real progress!

I have been on Vacation this week, but still have not managed to do much. Been to busy with other things I guess. Did get some stuff done however, so I thought I would share not that the rain has started, and I need to finish some side work I am doing for someone.

Got the main hoop and rear down bars in, and all gussetted. Got the Halo in and gussetted. Got it in there in such a way that when I want to take the top off and drive it on the streets I can still get to the bolts to take the top off. I have one of the Passenger front down bar in and sized. Just tacked, as I need to put some steel in there in place of the fiberglass that is in there under the down bar now.

Still need to shorten the door bars, and planned on doing that after the down bars are completed. Then I am going to dig out a seat, and put it back in. Not bolt in, but put in. Once I do that, I will know where to locate my back bar, and can size it. I feel like it is coming together.

Once I finish the side work elevations of a cabin I am drawing, I will go back out there and work if it is not raining.

I sure am happy with how it is fitting in the car. Every place I can make it tighter to the body I do. Making it tight to the body will make it easier to get a larger opening to get in and out. Even though I have been on a diet, and have lost 70+ pounds, it is still going to be a tight fit getting in and out.

Well it has been forever since I came in here and updated this. I will try to post a few updates on what I have done so far.... But for now here are a few pictures I took of the car sitting outside in the driveway yesterday.

And if anyone is wondering those rear tires are Mickey Thompson Sportsman Pro Tires. They are 33X21.5X15 Tires. I will try to update this off and on this week. Sorry I have not been keeping up on updating this.

It absolutely amazes me that there are people who can do what you are doing!!! This is a fantastic project to watch unfold, thanks for letting the rest of us watch as our jaws drop open, can't wait to see it finished.

Well I just had Ralph come inspect the Chassis. I am very happy with the results even though I failed the Inspection. I have had my concerns about how the front of the cage connected to the frame in my car and have had my concerns on how it was set up. In talking with Ralph he made a sugestion on how I can fix it, and it sounds like a great idea. He stated that I should take and add a piece of square tubing under the connection, and weld it to the frame. He told me how he would lay it out, and how to make it more sound. I am all over this idea, so this Saturday morning I am going to make a Lehi Metal Mart run, and Denny's for breakfast, then make a couple cuts on the floor pan so once the square tube is cut and sized, I can get in there and weld it all. He then stated that I should call him back and he will come check that, and we can do paperwork and I can get the all alusive decal I have been working on. Looks like it will be a weekend of Steam Cleaning carpets, and working on the Vette for me. Maybe by the picnic, I will have some of it back in the car, and on its way to going back together! Once that decal is in place, hopefully things will start to happen a bit faster with this build, and hopefully by this time next year there will be plenty of Video postings as well of it running the 1/4 Mile, cruising the streets, and photos of it in car shows or on a canyon pull out in the mountains around here.
