Default Tachout's Project....

Well I decided it was time to share with everyone what I am working on.

This is what I started with. It was a Pretty Much stock 1990 Red Corvette with a little less than 80,000 on the clock. I have had it about a year, and on the way home from work a rod started knocking. Ok so I was racing it at the drag strip, but it really did not start knocking at the track, but on the way home.

Well I first dissassembled most of the motor, and pulled it and the trans. First thing to know is I run around with people that have way to fast a cars.... Things kind of got outta hand. It was determined to only be rod bearings, but would mean I needed to rebuild the whole thing, and besides the trans needed go through too.

What has been decided to do....

Well first I found a deal on a Motor but will not go into detail on it until it is back from the Machine shop (and I am not going to take it to the machine shop until near the end of the project. Needless to say it is going to be a beast....High Nickle content 4 bolt main Block, Valasco Crank, Fully Polished Block, very ported Heads, Intake not settled on yet, Jezel Belt Drive, set up to run dry sump setup... This list goes on but we will detail that later, when I update the thread near that end of the build, but here is a teaser picture.

Well then I thought that the build would benifit from being a Twin turbo car with NOS. I got a great deal on an Accel DFI Gen VII unit so I can control everything.... and decided I am going to run a Pair of GT35R Ball Bearing turbos, Meth injection (Via a stage III Snow System) and then intercooled to boot. I am also thinking of 3 stages of NOS progressive.

Well we know the 700R4 would not handle that so I have a TH400 sitting on the floor of the garage that will be rebuild to handle all this.

Well the stock Dana 36 is not even going to be close to handling any of this so I decided to pull the rear suspension out and put in a 4-Link setup and a Narrowed Ford 9". Got a deal on the 9" and have some parts on the way. Yes this is going to be tubbed and that rear is narrowed quite a bit.

What is next.... Well I have a Competition Engineering Narrow Back Half on the way, and plan on cutting into her soon. She is also going to get a 12 point Cage. I know that some of you have asked about the Jegs Kit, well I am about to find out what kind of kit it really is for the C4. After waiting a Month, they tell me it has shipped and will be here middle of next week shipping truck freight. I will do a complete write up with pictures of the install, as well as, letting everyone know what I run into on the install. I plan on putting the interior all back in including the stereo and all, other than the stock belts. I plan on replacing them with true 5 point race belts on both sides. I am basically building a ProStreet car, but this one will also be raced. I am going to add NOS, Wheelie Bars, and a Parachute, and make it fully licensed at the track, but with a little creativity, I am going to make it so the Parachute can be removed, the Wheelie bars taken off, and the NOS Bottles removed, turn down the boost and put on street tires for the streets (Although I might run Mickey Thompson Sportsman Pro tires on the track and street, have not decided) I will update more on all this later, and trust me there will be lots of pictures.

Well Yesterday my New to me Rear End was dropped off. I got out there today to unwrap it.

Must have had 2" of bubble wrap all around it. Great Packaging.

Today I got my TH400 Transmission core... I needed it now because the Corvette does not use a Cross Member, or have a Transmission mount. They use that stupid C-Beam, so I decided to pick it up now, and put the Crossmember in when I am doing the cage.

Tomorrow is Field Day around the house as next saturday One of my Daughters and her son (one of my Grand Babbies) will be coming in so I have a ton of work to do around the house. Once I get it done, I am going to try to get some more of the Disassembly completed. Hopefully I can start getting to the cage, and narrowing the frame and all really soon. I will post pics of the progress along the way.

Well how about a little update.... I just got the confirmation that the 12 point cage kit is on its way from Jegs, along with the narrow frame rail setup (Rear Chassis) from Competition Engineering. I will have photos of them when I get them, as well as, let you all know what I think of the Cage Kit, and what I think of the entire install. I will also post photos as I go of the install, and reassembly of the entire interior and the 4-Link and the rear tubs.

Warning these are Graphic Pictures of a Corvette in partial disassembly state, and coming further apart. (This means you Don!)

First some pictures of what I have done on the Interior Teardown.

Well today I spend most of the day with my Daughter Candace who is in the Navy and my Grandson. Today is also my Daugther Jessica's Birthday. Had a nice time, and even made some home made Pizza from Scratch. I was able to make a tiny bit of progress. I got the rear Facia off of the Vette. It is only a few screws here and there, but let me tell you, I want to slap the engineer that decided to put all those bolts so far out of rearch. Anyway it is pulled off and now I can concentrate on getting the interior stripped. She is a shell of her former self, and getting even leaner.

Must say she is looking pretty pathetic right now. I have to still pull a bunch of stuff off of the back including the fuel tank, and a bunch of other stuff. Then I need to spend some time with the interior until it is nothing more of a shell. Then the fun begins. I have tracking numbers, and the Back Half from Competition Engineering should be here along with the cage.

Well after dinner I got another part off the car... Man was it a heavy chunk. I need to get the gas out of the tank really soon now!

And like all Muscle Cars and Corvettes what is it we all look for when we pull our Gas Tank off for the first time?

Build Sheet! Love finding them still intact, even if in this case it is not a special car or anything:

From here I have the rear end, and rear suspension. Then I will finish the interior, and I will be ready to get started putting parts on.... Trust me it will get more interesting soon.

Where are you going to locate your turbos?

How are you mounting that turbo 400?

I am going to move the battery to the back of the car, and am removing the AC since it never worked anyway. (Bad Compresser, Bad High Pressure Lines, Bad Condenser - not worth fixing). The turbos are going one on each side between the firewall, and the front tire. The side gills are going to be cut out, and a piece of race mesh is going to be put in. Then I am going to make a Air Filter Box that will hold a K&N Filter in there on each side so the air coming into the turbos is filtered.

As for mounting the Turbo 400 I am going to be putting in a small crossmember that spans the tunnel, and then from the inside it will be suppored with steel bar to the cage. I found a thread on here that I liked his design. I am going to do something similar but modified.... as I am going to put my Driveshaft Loop as a Bold on the the Crossmember with struts, and have to make sure I can route the exhaust around all of this and out the back, but since this car is getting Tubed and ProStreet tires put on, the exhasut has to route around a ton of suspension back there too. Keep watching the thread and as I get closer to putting in the crossmember I will take a ton of pictures of it, and since I sit in front of a PC all day doing Drafting... I plan to draw it out in CAD and then could shoot you a PDF of the plans for it, if you wanted to have one built similar to mine.

interesting plan on the turbo setup. Will you be able to keep them high enough to not run a scavange pump? So will you be using a custom built header for the turbos?

The headers will all be custom done, and this car is going to be running a Dry sump system, and I am really considering putting in a Seperate oiling system for the Turbos, using an Electric pump, its own set of Oil Coolers, Oil Filter, and Oil Container. That way after I make a run, I can leave the electric water pump, electric fans, running, and also leave the oil flowing through the turbos to help extend their life. Not 100% sure yet, nor am I sure it will even work, but that is the plan anyway.

Right now it is just destruction, but as it starts to go back together it should get a little more entertaining. If nothing else, you will get to see a C4 disassembled in someones home garage. Not a pro shop, but just what one guy can do in his home garage.

Well seems like almost daily I am going to be able to post pictures of progress or something happening.

For today:

First this guy stops by:

Says he has some parts for me!

The back half kit:

And my 12-Point Cage Kit:

Needless to say that there is going to be some assembly required, but in the end it will be a custom fit. First impressions of the Jegs Cage kits are as follows:

1. Takes forever to get (Like 6 Weeks)
2. Packaging Bites, as the box most of it was in was scattered all over the place
3. I will be doing some cut to fit in most areas.
4. Documentation is weak.

By the time I am done, I will probably draw this up in Autocad, and with pictures, have a pretty decent install manual. Just something I am going to do for me.

I'd contact Jegs and sell the manual back to them for some extra change.

That is the Jegs kit from Competition Engineering... Let me tell you, it is going to be way to long and going to need to be trimmed
