I have another post for a relay question, but now this has popped up. I had only code 22. serious bogging down issue.. harder you push the gas pedal.. more it feels/sounds like it's choking or not getting fuel. If you are idling and press the pedal.. it will bounce between 2100 - 2600rpm and after a few seconds will continue on though the RPM range like normal. I replaced the TPS yesterday, and it ran ok for a while. But now again has Code 22... which I read can also be a "Fuel Pump Cut Off open or bad ground"?
The Code 22 went away after I reset the ECU at lunch, and did not come back.
Reading on the forum I decided to replace the fuel "Sock" (as it's a very inexpensive part, $4.50, and If I ever need to replace the fuel pump, I'll know how...) Removing the fuel pump was fairly easy, and the "sock" was kinked in the middle, black in color, and a lot of silt and funk covering it. Although, even after replacing it, car still does the same thing... even slightly worse now. so I'm wondering if it's just the fuel pump going bad. I'll have to check the fuel pressure, which, what is the simplest way to do that?
And another odd thing.. when the car does bog down or hesitate.. it pops in the exhaust, not a full blown backfire, but a popping sound, that's when I have to let off of the gas.. and slowly press the pedal down to accelerate...
I had a similar behavior on another car at one time (A Saturn). Turned out to be ignition related - replaced the plugs and wires and all was well again. Very similar - poor response at low-middle RPM's, but did fine at higher revs. It would get thru the lower RPM stumble if I babied the throttle. I think that a very weak spark could have been getting washed out when calling for more than a little bit of additional fuel.
Do a check on the electricals, including verifying that battery voltage is good at all times. If things are weak, it could be causing a weak spark. How old are the plugs? Wires? Any signs of burnt/cracked wires?
Plugs and wires are all in good condition and are only a little over a year old. Like I said, after I replaced that fuel sock, its gotten worse, as in going uphill, the car slows down and the more gas I give it the more it makes that popping sound and wants to stall out... either as if it's not getting enough air or not enough fuel or too much fuel... going to do that fuel pressure check tonight...
and thanks to everyone who is helping out... taking these cars to a garage has been a nightmare.. Either they don't know "exactly" whats wrong or they have no idea at all. Last year I took it to Firestone for a "diagnostic"... they said it needed an O2 sensor and it would cost 169 total..... I went home and the 02 sensor was "bad"... it wasn't even plugged in anymore, as the wire had melted. $14 bucks at Advance and an hour of time fixed it... but anywho... yeah... any other thoughts on the issue?
I unhooked the vacuum line on the fuel pressure regulator, just to see if there would be a difference, and it made no difference at all not at high or low RPMs and the issue was the same... and there's definitely vacuum on the line so I know its not clogged.... does that narrow down the issue at all?
Put a Fuel Pressure gauge on the rail.. and it read.. 0 psi.... yep. Tried 4 times. Took off the fuel pressure gauge and pushed the pin in on the schrader valve... and nothing.. no squirting fuel.. not at idle OR even when revving it.. ideas?
Apply 12 volts to terminal "G" on the ALDL connector. That will power the pump continuously, until the power is removed. Try the pin on schrader while pump is running. If there is gas, try the gauge. Your looking for about 35-42 psi.
Do you hear the pump running ??
Some gauge hose fittings have an adjustable center pin to depress schrader valve the correct amount. Maybe yours is not depressing the pin.
Does any gas squirt out with power to "G" ?? http://members.shaw.ca/corvette86/Fu...mDiagnosis.pdf
Here's what I've done tonight with the help of a friend..
Did the connect 12 volts to G terminal to engage the fuel pump, I can hear it kick on, but still 0 PSI, nothing even coming out of the schrader valve even if'' I'd just push the pin in the valve down with a screwdriver...
So we removed the fuel pump, and put it in a bucket of water, attached it to 12 volts.. and works fine, hooked it back into the whole fuel pump pulsator etc... as if I was goign to place it back in the fuel tank, 12 volts again, and it still pumps fine, even if I hold my finger of the line, it builds up pressure quickly and squirts out...
Now the schrader valve... or should I say, lack of... I figured I'd remove the valve just to see if it was somehow clogged.. simple enough.. just used a wrench. Upon inspecting the hole.. it goes NOWHERE. As in, there's the metal part that's tapped to hold the threads of the valve, there's some of what appears to be plastic with a slight divot in it, but thats it... no gaps, no holes. no passageways, no way for fuel to even get to the valve. I'm at a loss on that one.. my friend said "it must have been built on a Monday..."
The Fuel Pressure Regulator.. is very stiff, and the little flat disc on the end that swivels.. also kinda stiff.. but the rubber discs are not torn.....
