I hear ya, I keep going back and forth on if I should get a beefier transmission first then build a big motor, or if I should get the big motor and see how long it takes for me to demolish my 4+3.
Well the motor is going to cost alot more then any tranny. I had a plan, but UPS certainly changed my plans. I am waiting for my money back on the tranny then I will hunt for another one.
If your looking for someone to build you a stroker like mine, look no further then Jim. He is a genuine nice guy, and most importantly has been there, and done that with these motors. You can always call me if you have any questions.
Plenty of guys have hot strokers up to 400ci and more with the stocker just gotta know what youre doing and spend the time. Now Im sure the FAST may have better features, just saying its not impossible....
The 408 I just did (with wilder cam timing) will be tuned with a stock ECM. Do what you think is best, Im sure Jim knows whats going on as he does it for a living. Keep us posted.
Time will tell Ron. I downloaded the program for the FAST, and there is alot of cool features. I "think" the time and money I would of invested in tuning with the stock ecm is why I went aftermarket.
If you drag race it the 4+3 is a goner...but for highway pulls and roll outs I was putting 650++lbft thru my 4+3 and the tranny was fine. I got a crappy rebuild on the OD so it never worked right but when engaged correctly it held fine up to some pretty hard pulls.
Good good, glad to see you're moving along. I've never done a stand alone EFI harness, but with regular harnesses I always thought it was easier to wire them up before the motor goes in, no? (I'd like to know as some day I may very well be going to FAST/DFI/XFI etc)
I like your combo Rick I wish now I would have went bigger cu. in. instead of my 383 but it's got really good parts in it and great heads. Anyway does anyone have that DVD that FAST puts out about their systems? I have a Mini Ram setup and thought about going to the FAST system with the single plane and their billet TB. Rick what oil pan is on your motor? THANKS Pipe

That is somewhat good news. So it's the clutch drops at the track off the line that kills them?
Well the 4+3 is all buttoned up, so it is staying put. How long it stays in is anyone's guess.

The aftermarket EFI systems are not terribly hard to wire up. I will say it would be a bit easier without the engine in place, but overall, not too much difference.
Rick,
Have you decided where you are going to mount the FAST unit?

Rick,
Have you decided where you are going to mount the FAST unit?
We will decide that when I take the dash out. But we do want 2 use the fuse located to locate the tuning cable. I think that spot is clean, and out of the way and easily accesible for tuning purposes.
I might be wrong, but I think you have a FAST or GEN 7 as well, and if so where did you mount the unit?
Just need a MAP sensor and vacuum lines. Rick, what are you going to do to keep the dash gauges going? You will need a piggy back harness I believe. I mounted the accel box and the stock ECM together behind the seats
i think that you are going to have to mount it in the passenger side under the dash. there is some room under there on the older cars. it will be easier then having to run the wire from the driverside which is all cluttered and narrow enough as it is. you will have to have the laptop in the passenger seat anyways. stand alones are a bitch. i would suggest something that piggy backs your stock harness for the sake of making it easier on everyone.
So it turns out that my wicked looking Chevrolet covers won't clear the wiper motor. I knew they were a tall design, but I didnt think they would sit that tall. So inturn they are for sale. If anyone is interested, send me a pm.
Tonight I threw on a set of valve covers that have been sitting in a closet for a while. It appears that I will have to go with them. I took a few pictures of the motor as it sits. Curious what you guys think?
The car is towed home, and is parked in my driveway until I have time to get back at it. This certainly is going to be quite the project, but I am sure it will be all worth it.
