Default L98 rebuild cost

What should it cost to rebuild an 85 L98 to a little better than stock?

it depends critically on who's gonna do the wrenching.-
but a min budget would be $ 2000

$1600-$2000 is the range of some of the estimates I just got. Builder I used offered to install any new hi-performance parts I brought to the shop. I went with the lowest estimate and got pretty good service. Builder also pulled engine and installed rebuilt for an additional fee. PM me if you want more info.

If you rebuild it yourself

Since we have 85's, we have forged pistons so I would reuse those if they are in good condition.

Shop around.....I found a short block with new TRW forged flattops, all rebuilt in the classifieds for 500 bucks. I took it apart after I noticed the pistons were 40 thousands in the hole, turned out it had a 307 crank in it. Had my original crank turned to fit for 75 bucks. Found some rebuilt same casting heads for 275 on Ebay, which smoked like a biatch, due to the fact that they left the o-rings off the top of the valve stems. Everything else was tight. Summit TPI cam, lifters, springs, 125 bucks. Timing chain set and gaskets...75 bucks. E bay injectors 125 bucks. Took awhile and was a hassle, but worth saving the money to me. You could find a deal on a low mileage or new assembled Gen 1 long block and just add your L98 components for under a grand I bet. Remember....red line is about 4500 rpm, so nothing fancy is required if you are on a budget.

What cam did you use? Is it a stock intake setup?

i have ASM Runners, ported base, ported plenum, but I want to rebuild the motor over the winter and put in new heads/ cam but want to stay mild

I have the Summit G5000 TPI cam kit....they claim 30 HP in a 305 with a chip, which I think is BS, since the cam just has a slight lift and duration over the stock cam. I am running a stock intake and the stock chip. I have ported the plenum and cut the lid. I have underdrive pulleys and pulled the vanes on the air pump, EGR delete, thin head gaskets from TPIS, AFPR and 19# Ford yellow top injectors. Gutted cat and Monza tips. I am also running a airfoil (I know it's a waste of 35 bucks) and a KN filter. If I was to do it over, I would run a hotter cam, but I am unsure of the benefit due to the rev limitations of the stock intake. After all that, I doubt I have 30 HP over stock. But I do have a excellent running L98 that I hope will last a good long time, or at least until I build that Mini rammed AFR headed 383 out of my original motor. I have a good education on how to do it now that I have worked over the stock setup.
