You only know what the computer thinks it is because it commanded that position not what it is physicaly at the plug. Engine performance is from what the plug sees not what the computer commanded. Sort of like if I tell my kid to mow the lawn and I go grocery shopping is the lawn mowed when I get home..maybe maybe not..LOL

FYI -There's another difference from my setup. I switched to an LT4 module when I installed headers a long time ago.

That's strange because I get my bin files emailed to me from PCMFORLESS. I've always loaded my own files with my laptop and Tunercat.

I had an extra one lying around and tried it but no change. Other than a sluggish feeling when it hits 3rd I can't tell anything is the matter. No backfiring or skipping going on. It's looking like I'm probably going to have to degree the cam in. If for no other reason just to eliminate it as the problem or it fixes the problem, one or the other.
You say your car is running good besides a sluggish feeling when it shifts into 3rd.I hate to say it,but if it was my car I would almost want to take that cam and springs out and get a new cam from comp cams and comp cams springs.Either way sounds like your gonna need to backtrack.

Maybe I should have done it a long time ago Rick. I'll probably get one and put it in at this point. I have to cover all the bases here to find the problem.

I guess some tuners are just like that. Maybe he has secrets or something. I'm going to get a dyno tune anyway when I get this all figured out so it doesn't really matter.

Yep, backtracking is what is next. It just isn't right after about 5K. That is why I wondered about the knock sensor issue. Maybe it's pulling timing out. I'm almost through with the honeydo project so the vette is next.

Thanks to all of you again for your input and comments! I'm going to whip this thing with all of your help! I'm ready to get back at it....I think I needed a break for a while.

Default Back at it.........

OK, carport is a garage again.

Home project is almost complete. A little staining left to do and a couple pieces of molding.

Here's where I am on the car.

I went out a few minutes ago and fired it up and let it warm up. No spark arching to be found. Cats or headers are not glowing anywhere.

I've replaced the fuel regulator just because it had a slight smell of gas in it and the vacuum line.

I have two new Delphi O2's that are gong in today. After that I'm going to try and get this data logging software to work (It's probably fine it's most likely the operator). I'll try and get a snapshot at say 3K or so.The car is on stands now.

I have my valve stem height gauge now so I'm going to check the height just to make sure it is around 1.78. I'll have to take the spring somewhere to get it checked as I don't not know how or have the equipment to do that. Unless it can be done with a vise.

I contacted my tuner to ask him about the knock sensor desensitizing. He said it would probably be a good idea to run the LT4 module also. Summit had a back order on them so I had to reorder from another place. It should be here next week. Wouldn't it be something if it was something that simple as a knock module pulling timing.

If nothing turns up with the spings or knock module I'm heading towards the opti then onto the cam just to make sure the sprockets are correct. Then I'll check the degree on it.

Just so you guys know I haven't been f..in off that last few weeks here's a pic. I love Eagles so the pedestal in the corner is for a carved one I have.

Wow Mike, very impressive work! Sure wish you lived close I'd gladly swap some garage time on that 96 for some cabinet work of that quality.

I do now Steve. I checked the spring install height on the exh and int on # 4. Intake was 1.78 and exhaust was just shy of 1.90.

The right side of the pushrod is what was in the lifter valley. Is that rub spot normal?

What kind of shims are you using on the bottom of the springs?

I was told it is not necessary to check spring height or use shims because the heads are still stock. So I didn't do either.

What should it be? I may have misread the gauge. It was just slightly more than the intake.

Something is wrong. The intake and exhaust should be the same (give or take a few thou).
Is the time to start measuring the retainer and seat thicknesses to see why there is well over an 1/8 of an inch difference.

What does the clearance look like with the stock head gaskets and the pushrods? Any binding?
