Default engine numbers

I just purchased a motor and transmission.....the trans is a 700r4 .......the engine is suppose to be out of a 96 vette.......i have looked online at several pictures of the LS1 and the alternator is on the drivers side.......on my engine it is on the right.......does anyone know how i can identify the year of the motor?

LS1's didn't come until 97.

Check for numbers cast into the block. There are listings on line with block numbers to identify the year and other information.

If it is a LT and not a LS then it is more than likely the more common 2 bolt mains LT1 from a Camaro /Firebird
If it doesn't have alum heads it is from neither

Of course someone could always have fitted the F-Body accessories on to a Vette engine

Check the 3 letter engine code stamped at front of block.
If the code is not ZXA it is not from a '96 ( if it is ZXD , you got lucky because that is a LT4)
If the code does not start with Z then it is not a Corvette engine at all

Hello,

Yes it does look just like that and it does not have aluminum heads......I checked the numbers and it does not start with a Z......the engine # V0828YSU.......do you know from this what kind of car it came out of?

Cast iron heads = B-Body; Caprice /Roadmaster, etc
Could even be the baby 4.3 LT1 V8

This is the number on the block....V0828YSU........it has 5.7 on the rear of the block.......I have found a definition for the all of the number except for the last part .......YSU.......I can not find this code anywhere.....do you have a source to identify the code?
