Is it typical for the side glass to be scratched? On my 91 convertible both sides are scratched in the same place. When I'm in the car looking at the side mirror, I'm looking through the scratched area. Is the cause of the scratching something that can be fixed or is it inherant in the designe. I don't want to pull the door panel until I have some info on the subject. Does glass polish really work, or will the side glass have to be replaced?
You will have to remove the door panel to find what is causing the scratching. It is most likely as Oakley said, the felt bumpers. It could even be the weatherstrip along the top of the door depending on which side the scratches are on. You will most likely end up changing the glass. Anything you can catch a fingernail on will not polish out.
Polishing scratches out of glass is not easy. If you can feel the scratch with your finger nail it is probably too deep. But its certainly cheaper than replacing the glass.
Same problem here! I really dont want to take the door pannels off bc I know something will break... Is it hard to take the door pannels off (96 coupe)?
Are your scratches on the inside or outside? Mine are on the outside
I know my rubber weatherstripping is too soft to cause is so...

On the outside, it is not the rubber outer door seal doing the damage it is the felt bumper/guides mounted inside the door as mentioned above. The guides get loaded with dirt and other elements and get "rock" hard over time and then end up acting like sandpaper on the glass....you can get a whole set of 4 to do both doors for under $40.
Thanks Oakley, I just ordered them. I, like Dogfish246 hate to remove door panels, they never seem to go back right. These have never been off, anyone have any tips on getting them back on correctly?
The door panels on my 93 were not hard to take off, and did go back on without looking like they've been messed with. They are fastened with screws and will go back on just as tight as they come off. You just have to go slow and unplug the lights, switches and locks as you go. The passenger side took me a while but finally found a bolt that has to be remove through the panel at the top of the handle. Every time I see windows for sale they have the scratches. I've been looking for a decent used set for a while.
You will have to get a glass polishing kit. A glass shop should be able to get one or they might allready have in stock. Expect to spend a few hours to remove the damage, that is if you can't feel the damage with your finger nail. If you can feel it, forget polishing and replace the glass.
jhammons01, I see you have seen or heard our commercials. The problem you run into is door glass is curved tempered. When you try to polish you can generate enough heat to cause the glass to break(explode). if the scratches are to deep and you do manage polish them out you can distort the glass.
Better off replacing them if you can feel the scratch.

Just unbolt them and slide them out.

Resin fill the scratches.........I'm just guessing....I'm not sure if that will work or not.

How do those bumpers scratch the glass on the outside if they are on the inside?
The guide that scratched the windows on my 95 beyond recognition were just below the outside seals/wipes (actually a part of that seal). There was a rubber (?) block just below the seal that used to be covered with felt. The felt apparently was gone many years ago and the rubber seemed to catch a lot of sand which really put a hurting on the windows. I bought new windows from a member on the forum. They were around $500 with shipping and everything if I remember correctly. I priced them at my local dealership getting the 'buddy deal' and they were over $400 EACH.
I was quoted just under $300 for the drivers side installed here in OKC a couple of months ago but I hoped to find some used ones so I've never had it installed.
After doing it myself, I would gladly pay $300 installed. The glass is held in with nuts that require a special tool (imagine that) to remove. I broke the window guide to get mine out on one side and then I could see the fastener and make my own tool.
