Default Update

here's where I'm at.
All the photos should explain

Put some nice looking spark plug holders on

Set the Fuel Pressure

Set the TPS

Tried to fire it up afterwards but didn't start up. I have a feeling the timing is off.
First turn and a huge puff of smoke come out the air cleaner.. Have a feeling that some unburnt fuel was in there from all the pressure adjustments
Second turn she backfired.
After that it just turning over with some skips. So i'm pretty sure I must have screwed up something with the timing. Now thats the only tool I don't have is a timing light!...lol. Oh well but I'm closer than ever now to have completed this transformation!!

you are most likely 180 out on the distributer

That may be possible but I don't think I could be 180 off. This is my logic.
Upon removal I put the engine to TDC, then my rotor was lined up with the number one cylinder on the distributor cap. When I installed the new small cap I was told I could put it in there in any direction and as long as my rotor was same spot as it was on removal it would be ok.
Could I still be 180 degrees off? (serious question not being a smart azz.)

It's possible the harmonic balancer has slipped on the hub. It happened on my c4.

Explain what you mean please. My engine stayed in the same postion the entire time it has been apart. The harmonic balancer was not removed so what do you mean it could have slipped on the hub? thanks

Ok if you didn't turn the crank at all, & you marked where the old rotor was pointing, & installed the new distributor with its rotor pointing at the mark you should be close. Turn the dist. alittle one way or the other. If you did that you can't be 180 out.
Now if you lined up TDC on crank (this is assuming the balancer has slipped) & installed the dist. w/ the rotor pointing at #1 on the cap, not using a previous mark, then your not gonna be close to being in time.
If you have not timed the engine in a while w/ a timing light then you wouldn't notice it. The harmonic balancer is made up of 3 pieces that is bonded together, the hub which is keyed & pressed on the crank. The rubber ring which wraps the hub, & the balancer which is bonded to the ring. Mine went out & it slid backwards wearing a hole in the timing cover. I guess any type of sudden jolt the balancer feels, like when your car hooks up good during a burnout, can cause it to slip.

Double check that you are TDC on the compression stroke.

I've messed that up before and it acted the same way yours is. I'm anxiously waiting for a dyno sheet to be posted....

The pressure is on!...LOL

I was battling a battery that wasn't fully charged the other day. I've allowed it to trickle charge the last two days so I should be good to go for some troubleshooting this week. I will also go buy a timing light since I don't have one.

As long as I confirm I'm getting spark it has to be timing. Like ex-fire says maybe its just needs to be turned a little. I just can't believe Im off 180 degrees, not with the precautions I took. I didn't even reinstall the belt until the distributor was drop ped back in. Honestly this is my first time doing the distributor myself and after I read a hundred threads about it, I made certain to be careful.
Well see, and I'm sure it will fire up soon...

qws - Did you replace your TV cable? If so, what year did you use? The reason I ask is that I replaced mine with a new 85 cable and it doesn't seem to be long enough.

Also, how are you routing the serp belt? I don't see the air pump or a bypass..

I am using a 90 cable. I have photos of how much longer it is than the 84 cable.
Routing is the same, I just removed the airpump. I also use a 82 inch belt. I'm also using the march crank pulley NOT stock. So if yours is a stock crank I would guess either a 84 or 85 inch would work fine. I'll get a photo later tonight of the serp belt and post it for you.

So I took a spark plug tester and tested for spark quickly last night. NO spark. While out and about today it hit me! I feel stupid. I installed my remote coil on the inner fender well. Ran my Red (+12v), and tach wire to it. Inner fender well is plastic NO GROUND! So later tonight I'll run a ground to it and I'm willing to bet I get spark!...
