Default Shifter indicator

How do you get the indicator connected to the shifter after you take off the center console?

This was not one of GM's better ideas.

On my 86 it just sits in a little notched groove. You kind of have to be careful when you put it back in because nothing holds it until you put the trim back down. Line it up, drop it down and then shift to see if it is caught.

Exactly right. The indicator has a horizontal tab that fits into a u shaped groove in the shifter indicator mechanism. Put it near the middle of the console, put the shifter in drive and they should fit. If not, just move the indicator until the tab fits into the groove. Did I just make this more confusing?

Look under the center console and it should be pretty self-explanatory
