Default Questions about heater core process

I searched for a while and couldn't find a specific fastguy process. Do I have to drain the radiator, or can I just clamp the hoses? Are the hoses the 2 thick ones near the passenger side?

Edit:
Also, I'm correct in assuming I should disconnect the battery?

Yes-always disconnect the battery
Yes-its the 2 thick hoses leading into the cockpit
Yes-drain the rad, you'll want to replace the coolant with fresh fluids

NOthere is no fast way to do the job

Keep searching the forum here in the C4 section, there are about 10 threads dealing with the heater core subject, also google it

Go ahead and set aside a weekend to do the job. You have to pull the dash to do the job. No other way.

And yes change the fluids. And while yo uare at it, replace the hoses. Only a few more dollars and well worth it unless the hoses are brand new already.

You don't have to pull the dash, remove the seat and work from below. 2+ hours, depending how handy you are.

Yessss, I was looking for those pictures. Couldn't find that last bolt

Alrighty, I'm pretty much at the point where I take the actual heater core out. I have to either drain my radiator, which I would need advice on, or I'd have to clamp off the hoses, which I'd prefer if it was simpler.

I have the cover off now, heater core is exposed. But I have no idea how to actually remove the heater core itself.

Did you cut the hoses? My hoses were bonded to my heater core from age/heat. I cut them with an angle grinder. Smelled terrible, but was easy. Then just pull it out

Did similar, but with a box cutter. Almost hit myself in the face with the heater core forcing it out.

You can add me to the list of people who have successfully replaced their heater core. Started at 11 AM, worked until 3:30 AM. Went to a friend's house from 7 to 11, and spent some time with the girlfriend, before she killed me for working on the car so long. But it got done, everything works, and I managed to not break anything!

What heater core did you go with?

And I've read that it is a good idea to run water through the core. Then blow the water out with compressed air before you remove the core. That helps keep coolant and water from getting into the car.

I got the one at Advance Auto Parts. Don't remember what brand, all that matters is it came with a LLW and it actually fit in properly without having to bend it.

Haha, I'm underage for that. Which makes me wonder if anyone younger than I am has done this.

you're a better man than me. I was very happy paying 400 dollars to have mine done for me, to not have to deal with it
