I have an oil pressure problem. When you hit it, the pressure holds for a second and drops.
I used to have a deep pan and changed it to the stock pan and the oil pump. New Melling pump installed with standard pressure and volume. Same problem.
A way to make it better is to switch from 5W30 to 10W30 oil. It holds more steady but it will drop after a few seconds to maybe 15 psi.
Is it the filter as some have suggested? I am using Mobil 1 oil and AC Delco filters. Everything else about the oiling system is the same.
If it is really sucking too much oil, why was it the same with the deep pan that held 6-7 quarts?

Does it only do this when the oil and engine are warm?

Did you change the pickup to match the standard pan and not the deep pan? If it's too close to the bottom, the suction can create a low pressure area and the oil can actually vaporize (similar to boiling but it's due to the low pressure in the suction area that causes it to "flash vaporize").

The 5w vs 10w has more to do with the coldest recommended temperature where that oil stays thin enough to pump through the engine on a cold start. However, it also can have an impact on the viscosity additive package in the oil and that could be related to an issue with the pickup being too close to the bottom of the pan.

Unless you have a single bad filter (have you changed it?), I doubt it's filter related. You could have a weak bypass spring, or a bypass that's getting stuck open (it's under the oil filter in the filter adapter that's bolted to the block). They are cheap enough, I might consider changing it.

That still makes me think it could be a problem with the bypass in the filter adapter (or both pans had the pickup too close to the bottom).
