While under the car I noticed that the exhaust pipes run along side the trans pan pretty close. I wonder if it would be worth while to make exhaust heat shields in this area. Wouldn't be too hard and might keep some heat out of the tranny. Another winter project to add to the list.
I was wondering about this myself yesterday when I was pulling the exhaust off to fix some rattling heat shields. Why are there heat shields protecting just about everything except for the overdrive on my 4+3? I know that I've gotten the fluid hot before, seems like it would be a good place to protect.
I've got some heat shield material I've saved from some clunkers. Shouldn't be any problem at all to come up with something that attaches to the exhaust pipes. It would have to keep at least a little heat out of the trans pan.
Just for reference, my 96 LT4 caught on fire by the drivers right leg because I run coated High Flow Cats on Long Tube headers. The location of the after market cats is much further aft on the drivers side heat shield which created a ton of heat and eventually caught the insulation underneath the carpet on the tunnel on fire. I now have a stainless steel sheild that was installed on the side of the tunnel to keep the heat off of the fiberglass and haven't had any problems since. I hope this helps.

I didn't take pics of the fire damage or the heat shield that was installed, but I can get some in a few when I start to part the car out. Just let me know.

sorry to hear that, are you parting it out because the car is that bad ?

Nope, not at all, the car runs great...........I'm parting it out because I'm going to use that motor in my Grand Sport. Which is getting a full paint and mechanical makeover and once I've done that, the suspension is going to be put aside for my 1955 Chevy Pickup truck, so the rest might as well be parted out. I really don't need three corvette's.

Thanks. When are you and the Significant other coming out to Hawaii again.

Hummmmm,
WELL, If it means that I have to pay another $2600.00 in Hospital Bills because of Lunch, then it'll be awhile!.......LOL. Actually we have a few travel plans for this year but none on the Island!......However, my arm doesn't have to be twisted TOO hard to get us back over there! Good hearing from you, it's been too long!

I haven't decided if I'm going to run cats on my Grand Sport yet, but if I do, I"m thinking that this might be the way to keep a barrier between the Fiberglass and the cats. This issue with my 96, it cause by radiant heat from the Exotic Muscle cat location on the drivers side that created my fire. The good part of the story is that I was at the carwash when the smoke started, and grabbed a garden hose soaked the floorboard underneath the car to put it out quickly.....(More like smoke in the insulation more than anything else)....So there was no real damage, just a small burn hole in my carpet about the size of a quarter and that's about it. The carwash I was at has an automotive shop, so it was immediately put over in their shop and on a lift to identify what happened. The on duty mechanic recommended and installed a Stainless steel panel pop riveted into the drivers side tunnel offset with some washers and I've never had a heat problem since. So looking onto my current project, I'm thinking of something like this:
Either way, I HIGHLY recommend heat shields around areas adjacent to cats, the other area's of exhaust are not as critical to radiant, or fire causing heat issues (IMHO).
TJ WONG had a write up where there was a similiar fir on a C4 and ended up doing this and using shallow pop rivets along with DEI material. http://www.designengineering.com/cat...und-insulation
and the rivets used for added security.
