Just a continuation of my dash cluster post. The tach is intermittent on my '85. It Self Tests when you crank the car then goes to 0 and stays unless its the lucky day it decides to work. It will work for days then go out again for days. I moved back to FL and it started working and made me wonder if the high humidity was allowing a connection to work.
I cleaned parts of my cluster with no help and I am gonna see if I am getting signal today at the cluster connector. Does the tach filter work intermittently or is it a component that either works or doesnt? Dirty connector somewhere?
The tach filter should be mounted/grounded to the block near the distributor....the thing pretty much works or it doesn't.
There is a multiple pin "connection" that goes through the firewall behind the battery it is possible that you could have an issue with a connector within that plug. That plug is a big pain in the a$$ to take apart, clean, reinstall and reseal so you may want to try to use a jumper wire to bypass the connector to see if that fixes you issue- before you dig in the connector.
Cleaning every connection you find is a great way to narrow things down.
