my 1992 lt1 won't get out of park. it will start, but when i try to go into drive it wont go anywhere. any ideas on what it is?
Not to sound like I'm some sort of super mechanic but check the Brake lights to make sure they are not burned out or not coming on. I know on my 4runner and my father's ford they do they exact same thing. It's is a safety control issue on most vehicles. Basically no brake lights equal no driving. I hope this is your problem because talk about your easy fixes.
Good luck
You have a steering column park/lock control cable which goes from the mid steering column bracket to the shifter assembly. Sounds like it came uncoupled at the backdrive pin at the column or at the shifter linkage. It has an adjustment similiar to a TV cable located at the shifter end. The console needs to come out to check the shifter linkages.
While you are in the shifter linkage, check the neutral/park start switch has not bound up in it's carrier.
Otherwise, disconnect the shift cable at the transmission lever and see if the shifter moves. If it does, then the problem at/in the tranny
There is a solenoid that is not working that is probably your problem. It should release when you step on the brake but they get sticky. It's located is the center under the shifter. You got to remove all the plastic and the shift **** to be able to see and work down in there.
The solenoid is usually removed since there is no replacement for it.

In the case of Corvettes, brake lights won't affect the tranny linkage. It is a good idea though, unless you're out in the boondocks at 3:00 in the morning and can't move the car because you've got a burned out bulb. I think a number of cars will show a warning on the driver's information center showing what bulb is blown, but I haven't heard of not being able to drive a car due to a bad bulb.
This thread from 2009 may help with your repairs if you have the soleniod installed, but the thread states 95/96... I,m not sure when the btsi was added.
On my 91, I cannot push the button on the shifter down until I turn the key out of lock. I do not have to touch the brake. It is a cable driven lockout as I stated before.
