Does anyone have any tips or advice for how to rig a chain or straps to the L98 to pick it up to install in a vehicle ? TPiS offers a device called the Happy Hooker Lift Plate, but there has got to be simpler and less expensive and creative way to lift the motor to install it. Any tips or advice on lift points on the block or heads to rig a chain or straps to lift will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
i just did a google search and came up with someone looping a chain through the air pump and aircon compressor brackets and fastening a a second chain to a lift point on the rear of the motor, maybe a bolt hole in the back of one of the heads. sounds not-so-good, but maybe someone else has tried it and it worked ?
the TPiS hook plate bolts to the fuel rails, which dont look strong enough to hold a 600 lb motor ...

Is the motor complete?
is easier if intake not in the way
I just run a chain from exh bolt #1 plug to bolt by #8 and a piece of 2 x4 each side to stop chain damaging valve covers

yes, motor is complete. i see your design , opposite sides and one bolt front and one back for balance, and by exh bolt you mean exhaust mainfold/ header bolts ? 2x4 is a good idea, i can visualize how that works to prevent scratching valve covers . Thank you.

wow, that is a nice gadget. the saying a picture is worth a thousand words is always true ! thanks.
and thanks to everyone for the tips. since i dont have the TPiS hooker, I think i will try the one bolt on the front of one head and another bolt on the back of the other head.
I am also considering using two 6' straps with loops on the ends (instead of chains) hooking each strap under a header and then hooking the two loops to the chain/hook on the forklift. anyone ever try something like this...
I used one bolt in the back of the passenger head, and one in the front of the drivers head. Worked fine for me. Put some towels or something on the VC's so they don't get damaged by the chain though.

This is the same method I used, worked fine..Be sure to slip a screwdriver or something in the chain where it connects to the hook on the lift so the chain doesn't slip tilting the motor and busting something up......WW

thanks for the interest in the thread and your advice
I hooked my chain to the #1 cylinder and # 8 cyiinder on the intake manifold where the water jackets are I used Large fender washers to make sure the chain didnt pull though with the weight of the motor pulling down on the chain I pulled and installed the motor my self using the same attach points on the manifold.

I hope these pictures Help.
the pictures help alot, thank you. they also show that our garages have a lot in common,... car parts
my two cents worth, hope it helps someone... the L98 was complete with all accessories, even the serp belt installed. we used a chain at the connection points on the rear of the heads, 3/8" bolts with two washers one under and one on top of the chain link with the bolt through the washers and the link on into the head. got as much bite as possible, abt 3/4" on the bolt. this created one lift harness in the shape of an upside down "V" and required a spreader bar of about 10 inches length to prevent the chains from squeezing in on the distributor. for the front we used tow/lifting heavy rope about 1" dia and routed it through the bracketry to pick up about four points where bracket bolts went into the heads. so we ended up with a four point lift rigging using the rope and the chain to a hook on the crane. we had to adjust the length of the chain and rope once to get the motor sitting at the proper level, then in it went. a bit tight to unbolt the rear head connection points but it can be done.
