What year is your car?
When packing the cooling system - same advice as above but add,
turn heater on full hot. When thermostat opens (you can tell by movement of the coolant in the radiator), have helper hold throttle to around 1500 to 2000 rpm. Keep topping up coolant in radiator until it overflows a little and reinstall cap, all while engine at high idle.
This is also a good time to install a new pressure cap and make sure the hose to the overflow tank is absolutely not leaking (air or coolant).

Also, park it on an angle or jack the car up on the radiator fill side. I just installed a new radiator in my 84 tonight and it worked like a charm.
