Default new 383 build

announcing a new arrival, weighing in at 200 kg !

I have decided to have a 383 short rotating assembly built and shipped as its cheaper to do that than build one yourself in australia, I will fit the roller camshaft and other parts then use the heads and top end off the 350 engine, and show some photo's along the way.
Eventually I want to directly compare the performance of the 350 versus the 383, as it will be a short engine only swap. The only difference outside the short engine will be 30 lb injectors and upgraded chip.

The 350 is out and being stripped, (let the fun begin !)

Are the water passages in the head epoxied? If so, how does water get into the intake manifold?

I was wondering what you meant, then i looked at the photo and it looks like it has been epoxied, but its just the reflection of the flash on the brown water stain ! I was running 50/50 coolant/water, Adelaide water is sucked out of the Murray river and tends to leave a brown sludgy mark

it was via sea container, and my local shipping agent died when the engine was sitting at the SF wharf, took 5 months to turn up

Well I found that pushrod I lost in the engine last October !!

These chevy engines are tough - I lost the pushrod into the valley on a club run, found a couple of second hand ones from a local and kept driving another 350 km,s before getting home, and then another 5 months after that !!

Yeah,by air mail it would cost you two eyes

We have a friend in Hamilton NJ that usually ships our stuff.he makes his business, but as a favour, takes our stuff into his container for a token price. Then he ships to Europe, where i live.I'm planning to have a 383 shipped this summer for next winter project.i was palnning a Blueprint engine.Looking at your brand, Tristar,i've seen its good stuff. They use Dart heads,or ,Dart blocks and heads, multiple choices for cams and very good price.

Well I cant comment on how good the engine is till I drive it, but I can say that the service from Tristar engines was excellent, I dealt with Ben Steine and he was great, the engine was built and ready to ship 2 weeks after I ordered it

The old engine is stripped and off the engine stand, the new engine is on and painted,

It is an 010-350 block with 4 bolt mains, .030 over,
Scat 3.75 stroker crank, Scat 4340 I beam rods and Icon forged alloy 11:1 flat top pistons.
next step is the retro roller cam install.

You should stuff a 3.875 stroke in that baby while you have it apart. 13 more cubes for no extra $$

When looking at the rotating assemblies, I see that some are balanced and some are internally externally balanced. Which one you I go for and why? What does it mean if it is unbalanced, balanced externally or balanced internally? Here is what I am looking at purchasing, which should I buy?

http://www.jegs.com/p/Scat/Scat-Chev...rPage=90&rpp=1

What camshaft would you guys suggest. I need a camshaft that will give me a boost in low end torque.

Finally I am debating putting aluminum heads, or rebuilding my stock heads and having them ported.

What are the advantages of buying aluminum heads, over using the stock iron heads? Thanks.

Internally balanced is better esp if youre going to be hard on it/rpms

Porting/going through stock heads vs new aftermarket usually a losing propsition. $$ vs results

With stock valves about 220-230cfm is all youre going to see out of the L98 heads. What are you doing about induction (intake)

oops edit-If you have the iron heads dont bother putting a penny into them.
