Default ESC wire sorry

hello

I have a 1984 4plus3 stock corvette.

I was checking my timing and disconnected what I thought was the Electronic Spark Control wire. When I disconnected the wire the Tach went shut off and the CEL did not come on. Did I disconnect the wrong wire. The wire I disconnected is yellow or white and goes through a filter or condensor.
If I did disconnect the correct wire, why did the CEL not come on?

Thank you,
Joe

and if you know how to post a picture please tell me.

Sounds like you disconnected the tach filter, thus no tach.
The EST wire on my 86 is beside brake booster and if I recall, it is tan in color.

Thank you. I cannot understand why the CEL is not going on.

Have you ever tested the vacuum of your Corvette. Mine is pulling 16 inches of vacuum aty idle

Lets go nuts with acronyms... ;-)

ECM is Electronic Control Module -- also sometimes called Engine Control Module. Later cars have PCMs (Powertrain Control Module) -- same thing, different name.

ESC is Electronic Spark Control -- that's the spark timing retarding done by the ECM in response to signals from the knock sensor and knock sensor module (called ESC module).

EST is Electronic Spark Timing -- that's the spark timing that the ECM adjusts to match the engine operating conditions.

The tach signal from the distributor is connected to the dashboard. The ECM uses pulses from the ICM (Ignition Control Module) in the distributor to determine RPM. It's a completely separate signal.

20 to 22 depending on how many miles are on it if it's in good condition.

The engine has good compression. All of the cylinders had about 200 psi when I did the compression test. So I am assuming that it is in good condition. Only has 72 K on it. Just trying to figure where it can leak. Can the EGR system cause vacuum problems?

If the EGR valve is stuck open it is a vacuum leak.

Sometimes carbon buildup in the EGR passages in the intake manifold can block the EGR valve from closing completely.
